View Full Version : 2005 Australian Rules Football Tipping & Disussion Thread
Yo...
Ok this is like.. the 4th year we've run this thing. For the uninitiated, the Australian Rules football season kicks off on March 25th and as usual we're gonna run a tipping contest. All you gotta do is pick the winners, nothing too fancy.
Of course a lot of you are sitting there thinking 'peh.. nothing to do with me.. dunno anything bout that game and I live half way round the world'. Well theres hope for you yet! We've never actually had an Aussie win this! The mighty trophy always seems to head to the US or Canada! This always turns into a pretty light hearted and fun thread, and well worth joining just to be a part of the fun.
I toyed with the idea of moving the comp to the footytips.com.au site that Brians using for the NRL tipping, but I think I'll stick with Oztips, its simpler to navigate and theres no need for the majority of players to register somewhere new.
So heres the signup details
www.oztips.com.au

Password to join: EVH
Over the next 2 weeks I'll be posting team previews etc to give you a little background on how the 16 teams are faring.

I'm in - its going to be great to see the cup come to Australia this year :thumb:
Ok heres the first of the team previews. I take these and edit a lot of crap from them, from 'Realfooty' site. They usually name teams in expected finish order, starting from 16th and working up. Not 100% sure they are sticking to that this year, or they have skipped a few teams or something, but anyway, I'll post what I got...
16th - Hawthorn
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/haw.jpg
After a dismal 2004, Hawthorn seems set for more misery this year - or so says our team of football experts who have picked the Hawks to finish with the wooden spoon. In the first of The Age countdown series, Melissa Ryan runs a rule over Alastair Clarkson's team.
PROSPECTS?
What prospects? Mention Hawthorn and the prevailing attitude in the larger football world is of doom, gloom and the wooden spoon. While Hawthorn has undertaken a revolutionsized overhaul in its bid to wipe out the memories of 2004 - finishing 15th with only four wins and an average losing margin of 44 points - many believe that on the field this year, there will not be much change at all when it comes to the ladder.
New coach Alastair Clarkson has brought ferocity, feistiness and discipline into a club that had suffered its worst year for four decades. Seven senior players left and Clarkson had five picks in the top 26 of the national draft to rebuild the key-position stocks, particularly in attack.
He hauled the playing list off to the Kokoda Trail during the pre-season, and beefed up his coaching panel with Damien Hardwick, Todd Viney and Ross Smith, while the club's fitness and medical staff have also been overturned.
That the Hawks will offer more competitiveness than the insipidness that reigned last year is apparent, if only in the signs shown in the club's Wizard Cup hit-out against premiership contender St Kilda, storming from a 39-point deficit to challenge for the match.
But the major area that seems likely to keep Hawthorn in its cellar-dwelling position is the matter of goals. Hawthorn was equal-last with Richmond for goals kicked in 2004 - 246 for the season, for an average score of 75 points a game - and with last year's leading goalkicker Nathan Thompson now wearing a Kangaroos guernsey, scoring will again be the major problem.
Question marks hover over Nick Holland and John Barker, once great but both struck down by a series of injury problems, who again must try to prove themselves capable of performing at AFL level, while Clarkson has already said that Peter Everitt, third in the club's goalkicking stakes with 28 goals even as he dominated the ruck, will spend more time in the goal square in 2005. Should the talls such as Holland and Barker fail to perform adequately, there will, again, be an over-reliance on small, quick types such as Mark Williams, who kicked 33 goals, Ben Dixon - who had a horror year last year - and former captain Shane Crawford. So, at its most basic level, it's about goals, goals, goals. And if the Hawks cannot produce them this year, then eyes will turn to monitor the development of recruits Jarryd Roughead, Lance Franklin and Matthew Little, who offer the hope of a young, revitalised Hawthorn forward set-up in the years to come.
FOR THE HAWKS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE FINALS
It will take something of a miracle. There is no doubt that Clarkson has made a vivid impact on the playing group and it might be that his discipline and enthusiasm can force an immediate rise into the eight, but it would need several clubs to experience an unexpected meltdown at the same time to help the cause. Maintaining an injury-free list, after the ravages of recent years, will also be essential, as will the rediscovery of form from a host of Hawks.

15th - Richmond
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/tig.jpg
In attack, in defence, on and off the ground, the Richmond of 2004 was a shambles. A new year, a new coach, and a healthy dose of some of the country's most exciting young talent has lifted spirits, but will it lift the Tigers up the ladder? Lyall Johnson runs a rule over the summer's comings and goings and predicts the club has turned the corner.
Surely anyone interested in the AFL who hasn't been living in a cave for the past year knows Richmond is the most talked-about club in the league, pretty much for all the wrong reasons.
The wooden spoon, its coaching turmoil and Danny Frawley's inevitable demise, fans spitting at players and the coach, the club's $2 million-plus debt, failed board challenges, the threat of an extraordinary general meeting and the departure of Ian Campbell, its shortlived chief executive, to name but a few, all made for a parlous state of affairs down at Punt Road.
But through the mire, a glimmer of hope emerged late in 2004 with the signing of Terry Wallace as coach for the next five years after his stint in the media. And in his charismatic wake came the drafting, albeit with the gift of a priority pick from its poor 2004 showing, of some of the most exciting young players the club has had in more than a decade.
The next few years no doubt will be a tantalising time for Richmond fans, with the likes of Brett Deledio, Richard Tambling and the other highly rated 2004 draftees joining stars such as Nathan Brown, Kane Johnson and Matthew Richardson. Throw into that mix the exciting Mark Coughlan, who virtually starts 2005 as a recruit after a groin injury sidelined him last year and, despite the wooden spoon, things actually don't seem altogether bleak.
Could the bottoming out at Punt Road and the massive clear-out of some pedestrian players be the turning point the long-suffering Richmond faithful have long prayed for? It must be, many are thinking, because things could not get any worse.
It is not underestimating the situation to say Wallace is considered the linchpin to Richmond's short- and longterm success. He has brought with him a strong assistant coaching team and engineered the trading of ruckman/forward Troy Simmonds to fill the shoes of Brad Ottens, who left for Geelong.
Wallace will have to change what has become a losing culture at Punt Road, but he has the chance to mould the Tigers' exciting young list into players of the future.
It is almost pointless to explain where the Tigers need to improve – essentially it is everywhere. They need to kick more goals, leak less in defence, run harder, rebound quicker and use the ball faster, be more accountable, bulk up in the gym and vastly improve their hand and foot skills. Oh, and a smattering of con- fidence would go a long way.
Wallace himself admits it will be no mean feat to turn the club around and has warned fans not to expect too much in his first year. Regardless, fans can expect to see significant improvement, enough to perhaps surprise a few higher-rated sides. It will be a tough road for the Tigers this year, but to use the cliche, the only way is up.

14th - Adelaide
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/cro.jpg
There are few familiar faces in the Adelaide Crows of 2005 – in the coach's box or among the players. Neil Craig must bring on the youngsters and the midfield must become more consistent, writes Len Johnson.
A casual Adelaide fan returning from a 12- month sabbatical visiting European wine-producing areas would struggle to recognise the 2005 Crows.
It has been a time of change, the Crows finally seeming to embrace the reality that a third premiership to go with the unexpected pair in 1997-98 was not just one or two readymade players away.
Change and youth is all the go at Adelaide, albeit belatedly. Wayne Carey and Nigel Smart did not see out last season. Talented but wayward Ronnie Burns also retired late in the year. Experienced midfielder Tyson Stenglein has gone to West Coast. Ben Hart and Mark Stevens played just nine games between them in 2004.
Don't turn to the coaching box expecting to see familiar faces either. Gary Ayres was replaced by Neil Craig midway through last season. Former West Coast premiership player Don Pyke, Paul Hamilton and David Noble replace Peter Curran, Mark Mickan and Darren Jarman in the support roles.
Into the mix come Scott Thompson, returning to his home town via a trade from Melbourne, and six youngsters through the draft and a rookie list elevation. Thompson, who did well with the Demons until sidelined by a broken foot midway through 2004, will bolster an already strong midfield. Otherwise, the Crows will be looking for a broad range of players – Graham Johncock, Trent Hentschel, Luke Jericho, Brent Reilly among them – to step up to a higher and more consistent level of performance.
If enough do, the advantages of 12 games in Adelaide and a list, which still includes talents like Mark Ricciuto, Andrew McLeod, Tyson Edwards and Simon Goodwin, could yet see the Crows in the final eight.
FOR THE CROWS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE FINALS ....
if they can build on a stoppages set-up, which resulted in leading the competition for hit-outs and ranking fourth at clearances; if Ian Perrie can grasp his last chance to make it as an influential key forward and Trent Hentschel continue to develop at centre half-forward; if Ricciuto, McLeod and Goodwin fire up yet again; if the youngsters come on quicker than expected . . . . given all that, the Crows could improve by the four or so wins they need to make the finals.

13th - Western Bulldogs
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/bul.jpg
What’s happened at Whitten Oval since last September? What hasn’t happened, is more like it.
Even before the Bulldogs sank to 14th spot on last year’s ladder, ending a second season of misery ahead of only Richmond and Hawthorn and waving a final goodbye to Peter Rohde, the club had its new coach ready to walk through the door.
While the other coachless clubs spent weeks compiling lists of appropriate candidates and assessing their presentation skills, the Bulldogs got Rodney Eade alone in a room, swore they wanted only him, and let him leave only when he signed a three year deal.
After two years away from the action, the former Sydney coach takes charge not only of the team, but of the football department, as general manager of football. Last year’s assistant coaches, Chris Bond, Leon Cameron and Alan Richardson remain, with Matthew Drain and conditioning coach Justin Cordy (who has been raved about as much as anyone over summer) the most notable new faces.
Eade’s appointment immediately hushed the group of past players threatening some sort of off-field hubbub. The club’s only post-season hiccup came when it settled a breach-of-contract claim with Matthew Croft before the retired defender, booted out of last year’s team for younger Bulldogs, could take it to court.
Otherwise, there have been big smiles all around. South Australian Adam Cooney and West Australian Farren Ray, picked at the top of the 2003 draft, agreed to contract extensions that should keep them from their home-town teams’ clutches for at least the next few years.
The Bulldogs’ bad 2004 delivered another pair of of first-round draft picks (that makes seven top-10 selections in the past five national drafts).
Ryan Griffen, drafted at No. 3 arrived from Adelaide with a minor knee injury but was up, running and in the team by the start of the pre-season games.
The No. 6 pick, Tom Williams, is expected to take longer to settle, having only recently discovered AFL footy, although he did appear in the Wizard Cup semi-final.
Stephen Tiller, Damien McCormack and Jesse Wells provide the rest of the new blood, the Bulldogs staying out of the post-season trading game.
The excitement did not end there, either. Wrapped in a red, white and blue scarf and dishing off dodgy handballs in a pre-election publicity stunt last year was Prime Minister John Howard, promising $8 million towards a long-required revamp of the Bulldogs’ home ground that should help them shake the “beleaguered’’ tag they so hate.
All the west needs now? Some wins.
FOR THE BULLDOGS TO MAKE THE FINALS:
They must stop goals, and kick them (oh fucking DUUUUHHHH - Goo) : the abilities of the quick, skilled Bulldog midfielders and flankers is well known, but they will need tall, young and strong bodies to emerge at each end.
Confidence gained from a lively Wizard Cup campaign must spill into the start of the real season, the team must take quickly to Eade’s adventurous new plans, and cope with the three or four-match losing streak the new coach believes is inevitable.

12th - Carlton
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/blu.jpg
Carlton won more games than it was supposed to last year. It will have to surprise again to make the eight in 2005, but there are definite signs of life at Optus Oval. Karen Lyon weighs the Blues' finals chances and finds them wanting, but not by much.
There is an air of excitement around Optus Oval for the first time since 2000.
While many had expected Denis Pagan's Blues to collect a second wooden spoon in 2004, the team pleasantly surprised most by winning a respectable 10 games, with quality wins over finalists Melbourne and Essendon.
The air of expectancy has turned into an impressive pre-season. The form of forwards Brendan Fevola and Lance Whitnall has suggested a dynamic forward line and the midfield, led by Nick Stevens, still possesses plenty of class.
The question mark may still remain over the club's defence, but there are several promising players in the back line. Bret Thornton is a player who has turned into a genuine full-back for the club and will hold down one of the key positions in the back half. Trent Sporn and, of course, the courageous David Teague give the Blues something to work with.
Will Matthew Lappin play forward or back? The All-Australian defender is now a genuine class defender but showed last Saturday night that he can still be an option in attack.
Since taking over the reins at Carlton in 2003, Pagan has overhauled the list and the results appear to be coming through several young players, while several older stars returned to form last year.
Last year's best-and-fairest winner Teague was one of four recruits - along with Stevens, Heath Scotland and Jordan Bannister - to end the year in Carlton's top 10 at its best-and-fairest count.
Adam Bentick and Andrew Carrazzo are success stories from last year's rookie list who have found a spot on the senior list, while the Blues' top draft pick Andrew Walker is emerging as a young gun midfielder with class and talent in the middle of the ground.
The question will be can the Blues cover the loss of any of those players through lack of form or injury? The Blues might not quite have the depth to demand a top-eight position, but they will go a long way to shaping who gets to play in September.
FOR THE BLUES TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE FINALS
CARLTON will need Fevola and Whitnall to carry their pre-season form into home-and-away action and hope their defenders continue to improve to make the finals for the first time since 2001. An injury-free year from skipper Anthony Koutoufides would go a long way to helping and while their 2004 recruits did well last year, they will need to continue their efforts this season.

12th - Essendon

Received the email and am honored to be back for a sophmore try!!!
Go Bombers!!!
Oh and hello Goo!!! :)
Heya Maxie

11th - Kangaroos
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/Kan.jpg
There are plenty of pluses once again at Arden Street, with dynamic young talent and a coach who squeezes the best from his list, but the Kangaroos might struggle to locate the class and consistency to bound convincingly into the eight. Karen Lyon reports
The past two seasons have been a case of what could have been for the Kangaroos. In 2003 and 2004, the Kangaroos have appeared to be on the cusp of finals before dropping their form late in the year and watching their chance go by.
The Roos went for experience during the summer break, recruiting the Hawthorn duo of Nathan Thompson and Lance Picioane. They had little impact in the national draft but were handed a gift when they received the much-hyped teenager Jesse W. Smith thanks to the father- son rule.
The arrival of Thompson is an interesting addition for the Roos.
He should release Leigh Brown from rucking duties and allow the club to play Brown down back for the season. That should take pressure of the ageing but courageous Leigh Colbert and the uncertain Shannon Watt.
With Sav Rocca, Drew Petrie, Thompson and possibly Corey McKernan as talls in the forward line, the Roos have plenty of marking options. Their midfield, with the likes of Daniel Wells, Brent Harvey, Shannon Grant and Adam Simpson, has real depth.
The question will be the defence. Can it hold firm? The Kangas could kick plenty of goals in 2005 but will they be able to stop a flood against them? That could decide their finals hopes.
FOR THE KANGAROOS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE FINALS
To take part in September action, the Roos will need their best 22 on the field for the vast majority of the season; a run of injuries would hurt the Roos more than most clubs. Goals shouldn't be a problem but they need their defence to hold tight to make the top eight.

10th - Collingwood
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/mag.jpg
Collingwood's stellar 2002 and 2003 seasons are now but a memory after last year's fall from grace, and Jake Niall reports there is a lot of rebuilding to do in 2005.
In the eyes of most critics, including this one, Collingwood's 2004 is more representative of its short-term prospects than the consecutive grand finals in 2002 and 2003.
The Magpies were seen to have wrung the most from themselves in those two admirable seasons and, with a combination of injury and weak depth, collapsed to the bottom four last year.
Which is the real Collingwood? In 2005, the expectation is that it will be somewhere in between these extremes, but closer to its 2004 level - a mid-pack team that could play finals if it gets the breaks in the medical room, but that will miss out if the premium cattle are not on the paddock enough.
Collingwood's competitive strength is its key position set-up - it has a sound defence, led by James Clement, and, with match-winners Chris Tarrant and Anthony Rocca, plus cameos from Josh Fraser, the Magpies also are blessed with a capable attack.
The midfield, strong in the grand final years, has declined in direct proportion to the ageing Nathan Buckley and Scott Burns. The Collingwood midfield has a one-paced, blue-collar sameness that must be remedied quickly if the Magpies are to see September. An injection of Alan Didak's class, coupled with Ben Johnson's speed, is the obvious short-term solution, but Didak's pre-season setback has probably postponed a move to the midfield by several weeks.
Internally, the Magpies are not deluded about their deficiencies, but, like most clubs, they still rate themselves - and their prospects - a little higher than sceptical media sages such as The Age experts. Their challenge will be not to get back into the eight - two-thirds of the 16 clubs harbour finals aspirations - but to assemble, or reassemble, a team capable of winning, not just making, grand finals.
While the inclusion of Blake Caracella and Chad Morrison improves competence and depth, to get back among the contenders Collingwood needs either to unearth a superstar to replace Buckley, or develop a couple of A graders who, collectively, fill his once-in-a-generation boots.
FOR THE MAGPIES TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE FINALS
Like most teams, they need most of their better players to play most of the games. The combination of Chris Tarrant and Anthony Rocca is their most potent weapon and they need to have the tandem intact to beat decent teams. Nathan Buckley's class would also be handy, while Ben Johnson and/or Alan Didak must step into a sluggish midfield.

Be nice Gibbo and we will think about taking it a little easy on those Swans when the time comes.

Hey, didn't we roll you guys late last year?? :p ;)
I can't remember what happened in the first game.
We beat you down here and you guys beat us up there.
In recent years it's always like that and both our clubs end up in basically the same position (it has become frustrating).

9th - Essendon
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/bom.jpg
A team with two of the game's biggest stars (and most enigmatic coach) can never be discounted, but Essendon has much to do in the way of educating youngsters and getting the most out of mid-career players before it can seriously threaten better teams, Rohan Connolly reports.
The pundits were climbing on board the Bomber bandwagon this time last year - with far too much enthusiasm, as it happened. Perhaps it could be an over-correction, but there seems to be as much pessimism now about the Dons' prospects in 2005 as there was optimism this time a year ago.
Essendon, as usual, can be expected to be competitive. But the Bombers' unhealthy reliance on star duo James Hird and Matthew Lloyd, plus the long-time concerns about a hardworking but slow and stodgy midfield continue.
The Dons are working hard on a remedy, but have they discovered a fix good enough to take them from a lower-order finalist to genuine flag chance? It doesn't appear so.
There's been a partial changing of the guard at Windy Hill over summer, premiership trio Joe Misiti, Mark Mercuri and Sean Wellman retiring, another band of draftees inducted, and more experienced pair Ty Zantuck and South Australian Magarey medallist Paul Thomas brought in to help stiffen the defence.
Wellman's loss as a defensive general will be keenly felt, while Misiti, even on his last legs, had a knack of winning the ball that many of his younger teammates did not.
The job of rejuvenating what has been at times a stale-looking mid- field set-up will fall largely upon the shoulders of a couple of youngsters and some more experienced types, with improved defender Mark McVeigh likely to get his chance in the thick of the centre-square action, as should promising pair Ricky Dyson and Brent Stanton.
That should at least relieve some of the burden upon the overworked Jason Johnson, while Damien Peverill continues the transition from defensive stopper to genuine ball-winner.
But Essendon desperately needs its sizeable contingent of young players to start delivering more than just glimpses of talent. Marc Bullen is entering his fifth season of senior football, Ted Richards and Joel Reynolds their fourth, Jason Winderlich and Jobe Watson their third, yet even the Dons are still unsure just how big a part any of them can play in their future plans.
They will surely be given more chances to prove themselves in 2005, and it's their ability to give something back on a consistent basis that will go further to determining the Dons' season than will the performances of Hird and Lloyd, no matter how good that champion pair are at their peak.
FOR THE BOMBERS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE FINALS
Stars Lloyd and Hird will have to stay fit and in form, as will the hugely talented but frustrating Dean Rioli. The Dons' youngsters will have to make much more of their chances. The midfield will have to provide greater pace and more options, and defensive linchpin Dustin Fletcher will have to steer well clear of the revamped tribunal.

8th - Fremantle
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/doc.jpg
Fremantle approached last year's competition with genuine premiership hopes but ultimately flattered to deceive, Dan Oakes writes. This season, coach Chris Connolly, despite the reassurance of an extended contract, will be desperate to turn the wealth of talent at his disposal into finals success.
Last year was supposed to be the one the Dockers really showed what they were made of. After reaching the finals for the first time in 2003, Chris Connolly had the younger players with games under their belts - Matthew Pavlich, Byron Schammer, Graham Polak, Justin Longmuir, Paul Hasleby and Paul Medhurst - who were supposed to turn Fremantle into genuine contenders.
Ultimately, four straight losses at the end of the season left the Dockers sitting outside the finals spots and led to low-level murmuring about Connolly's job, with suggestions that he should concentrate more on building a competitive team and less on media appearances. The board put those concerns to rest last week, signing the coach for another three years, but the pressure could ramp up again if the Dockers put in another below-par effort this year.
Too often, the Dockers have wilted when put to the test, as shown when they played Geelong at Skilled Stadium in round 20. The conditions may well have seemed sub-arctic (indeed, Jeff Farmer actually suffered hypothermia), but not at any stage in their 50-point loss did their body language say anything other than "Let's get this over with and get out of here". Port Adelaide might have lost in the same position, but they would have lost fighting. The signings of Heath Black from St Kilda, and Jarrad Schofield and Josh Carr from Port Adelaide, could be exactly what the club needs to give it that extra push over the top. Having these three running around in the middle will take the pressure off Peter Bell and Hasleby.
Hopefully, Connolly will push Pavlich and Polak forward, where they can use their size to take some of the weight from the shoulders of small forwards Farmer and Medhurst, who both toiled last year (more sporadically in Farmer's case) but contributed only 77 goals between them.
The smooth delivery of Black and Schofield will supply the Dockers' forwards with the ammunition they need, and having the bruising Carr on board also will stiffen a team not noted for its hardness at the ball. If Robert Haddrill continues in the same vein as last season and Roger Hayden rebounds from his injury problems to recapture his form of 2003, the defence also will be tighter.
FOR THE DOCKERS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL
Quality young players such as Pavlich, Polak, Hasleby, Medhurst and Longmuir have to put their hands up and win the tough games for the Dockers. Nobody can accuse them of not trying, but players of their quality have to stamp their authority on a contest. Bell, champion that he is, should have more competition for the best and fairest.

7th - Sydney
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/swa.jpg
After making the finals for the past two years, the Swans look set to match that success again this season. But the lack of a superstar could stop them from playing on that one day in September, Melissa Ryan reports.
Sometimes team-building does not have to mean an absence from the top eight, and this would certainly appear to be the case for Sydney.
The Swans have quietly gone about their business over the summer. Former Demon Darren Jolly was added to the ruck stocks and former Geelong mid- fielder David Spriggs was welcomed, while others such as Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes have used the time to heal the injuries that hampered the team last year.
And team is very much the emphasis when it comes to the Swans, a unit that is even, dedicated and not shy of hard work. But where they perhaps will falter in raising the stakes this year is in the superstar, or gamebreaker, factor.
Undoubtedly, Goodes at his Brownlow best and Barry Hall in all his bustling glory fit that bill, with Michael O'Loughlin and Nick Davis capable of ripping a game apart at times. But while the Swans have, in the past two seasons, defeated the tried and true powers of Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions, and overcome rising power St Kilda, where they may not keep pace this year is in matching the star quality of those teams yet again.
Coach Paul Roos will stick to his vow of banning Goodes from the ruck after knee injuries last year and has pencilled in a role at centre half-back - with youngster Lewis Roberts-Thomson also being groomed for the key defensive position - but knows he will throw Goodes forward or even use him as a ruck rover depending on the flavour of the game.
But with the likes of youngsters Jarrad McVeigh and Paul Bevan continuing to improve, the prospect of a fit Adam Schneider and Andrew Schauble, the dashing runs of Tadhg Kennelly or the courage of Leo Barry, and the work from the likes of Ryan O'Keefe and Ben Mathews, the Swans seem certain to contest the finals for a third straight year.
If they stay fit, the Swans are capable of much. Simply look at last year, when Sydney finished sixth despite a host of injuries.
FOR THE SWANS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL
Having made the top eight for the past two years, and with the present list and blossoming of talent from Sydney's younger stocks, there is really no reason for the Swans not to feature in September. Should they maintain their strong home record, 12 games in Sydney should ensure another finals appearance. To progress further, the Swans would want to break out of the hot-cold pattern that bounced them around last year.

6th - Geelong
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/cat.jpg
When Geelong nabbed Brad Ottens on the final day of trading last year, the last piece of its premiership puzzle seemed to lock suddenly into place. Beaten narrowly by the Brisbane Lions in their preliminary final, the thought of the former Richmond forward standing beside Ben Graham gave the Cats the sort of height and scoring potential that may have nudged them that extra step a few weeks earlier.
Now Mark Thompson can only dream about how powerful a pair he might have had on his hands; when the former skipper made Geelong’s off-season even more interesting by rejecting a one-year contract to punt on a National Football League career, he put the sort of responsibility Ottens had left at Punt Road right back on his shoulders.
And from what he has seen of his rejigged forward line throughout the Wizard Cup and practice matches, Thompson indicated the side had some serious settling down to do.
That said, Ottens was not the most intriguing off-season arrival at Skilled Stadium. That honour sat with the even more enigmatic Nathan Ablett, who having preferred to play for the Modewarre juniors than his dad’s old team, decided to give AFL footy a go.
Having traded away draft picks for Ottens, the Cats used their two selections to tinker, rewarding Matthew Egan, a ready-made defender, with promotion from its VFL team and drafting Brent Prismall from the Western Jets’ midfield.
Departures were few. David Spriggs went to Sydney, Graham to New York, David Loats’ bad knee pushed him into early retirement and Daniel Foster was cut. Assistant coach Daryn Cresswell left to join Leigh Matthews’ off- field Lions team.
More significant, though, was Brent Moloney’s move to Melbourne as part of the Ottens swap. That the popular, hungry midfielder was sent away so reluctantly emphasises how tightknit a group the Cats have created in the past five years.
These players are growing up together, and appear ready to do big things together, but will have realised now they won’t be together forever and that they still have to make things happen. Their time must start now.
FOR THE CATS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL:
It's like last year: they need goals. Ottens has replaced Graham as the key forward, but he has not kicked more than 46 goals in a season, delivering tallies of 27, 10 and 16 since his stellar 2001. With a solid back line and a young, passionate midfield, the Cats need Ottens to click quickly and for all their goalkickers to share the load with honest, weekly contributions.

5th - Melbourne
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/dem.jpg
In the disappointment of five straight losses to end 2004, and an eventual finish of seventh, it was easy to forget that Melbourne headed the AFL ladder as late as round 18, when the Demons' win-loss record stood an impressive 14-4.
That was no fluke, either. A month before the finals, Melbourne was every bit as serious a flag contender as fellow upstarts St Kilda and Geelong proved to be, the Demons having earned plenty of respect with their exciting, hard-running game, and a real evenness across the line-up.
And there's little reason not to expect the same from Melbourne in 2005, even if recent history has taught Demon fans that a football year ending in an odd number usually means disaster.
While it may not have the out-and-out superstars of a Brisbane Lions or West Coast policing its midfield, Melbourne has a depth of engine-room talent the envy of most of its rivals, featuring a group of players whose improvement has been steady rather than spectacular.
Cameron Bruce and Brad Green are now far more than the handy forward goalkickers they started out as, their skill a real plus in the centre square, while lesser lights such as James McDonald and Matthew Whelan are also more important contributors these days. Geelong pick-up Brent Moloney has impressed during the pre-season and gives coach Neale Daniher another string to his midfield bow.
There's an outstanding ruckman in Jeff White to work with them. Then there's a clutch of fast-emerging kids; goalsneak Aaron Davey, backman Jared Rivers and key forward Brad Miller are the pick, but Brock McLean, Daniel Bell and Colin Sylvia are capable of making just as big an impression.
The "ifs" for the Demons are probably at either end of the ground. There's still a dependence on ageing skipper David Neitz for goals, Melbourne's bad days usually corresponding with his. A greater goalkicking return from Miller, Russell Robertson or Ben Holland would certainly ease those concerns.
Defensively, too, Melbourne can look a little vulnerable, full-back Alistair Nicholson game enough but outclassed against the very best key forwards, Rivers too young and inexperienced to be expected to handle centre half-back week after week. A successful return by Ryan Ferguson from a season ruined by injury certainly would give the back line a more solid look.
But Melbourne is well-coached enough, hungry enough, and has enough class throughout its list to overcome those doubts. This time, there will be little excuse should the odd number at the end of the year coincide with another Demon slide.
FOR THE DEMONS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL
Veteran key forward David Neitz needs to stay fit and in form, his 69-goal return last year more than double the Demons' next highest goalkicker. Boom youngsters Jared Rivers, Aaron Davey and Brad Miller need to maintain the high standard they have set for themselves.

4th - West Coast Eagles
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/eag.jpg
With what is now regarded by many as the best midfielders in the competition and the return of big Michael Gardiner to add firepower up forward, West Coast looks a legitimate premiership contender, Lyall Johnson writes.
Because of its first-class midfield and the way it finished 2004 with 10 wins from 13 home-and-away matches, West Coast has been cast by many as premiership favourite. And despite their loss to Carlton in the final of the Wizard Cup last Saturday night, the Eagles' excellent pre-season has many in the West feeling a buzz that has not been there since the glory days of the early 1990s when they won two flags in three years.
Over the break, coach John Worsfold continued to develop his team from the ground up, recruiting only one established player, Tyson Stenglein from Adelaide. Only nine Eagles have played more than 100 games, and with many of the team's big names just reaching maturity in AFL terms, all the signs point to this being a big year for the team.
Without doubt, West Coast's superstars are its onballers, who have already gained the reputation as the best midfield unit in the competition. It is hard to dispute. Led by Brownlow medallist Chris Judd and the likes of Ben Cousins, Chad Fletcher, Daniel Kerr, Andrew Embley and Stenglein, it boasts electrifying pace, footy smarts, solid bodies and youth. It is hard to see too many teams being able to cope with such midfield depth. In the absence last year of Michael Gardiner due to a knee injury, the smaller players were more than ably served by Dean Cox, who went from backup ruckman to top three for hitouts in the competition.
But it is outside the centre where the Eagles have been big improvers. Long criticised for being too small up forward, relying heavily on the brilliant but diminutive Phillip Matera, the return of Gardiner will give the Eagles a key-position forward with both size and talent. And after making his debut in round four last year, Mark Seaby also has emerged as a tall marking forward option whose versatility also allows him to ruck. Add to this mix Matera, the electrifying Ashley Sampi, Andrew McDougall if he can stay fit, the tall and athletic Brent Staker and midfielders Judd and Kerr, who not only deliver the ball with precision but like to get on the scoreboard themselves, and there looks to be ample forward firepower.
The Eagles improved greatly in defence last year but it remains their biggest problem. Quinten Lynch and Darren Glass are being moulded in the key position roles but, while tall and solid, they are still young and inexperienced. It will be a steep learning curve for them. Veteran Drew Banfield is there to provide experience and support but he can't be expected to play a key role this year, so ex-Hawk Daniel Chick will need to step up a gear and David Wirrpunda needs to fulfil his great potential consistently.
In all, though, the Eagles have the makings of a very good side and will challenge strongly. But can they go all the way? Time will tell.
FOR THE EAGLES TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL
From their past away record, the Eagles will need to finish high enough on the ladder to guarantee themselves as many home finals as possible. From there, they could build momentum to produce an away win. Importantly, their young brigade will have to stand up to the extra pressure of finals football. The Eagles definitely have the engine room to do the job, but need some of their key-position players to take the next step.

3rd - Brisbane Lions
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/lio.jpg
Age and the salary cap have taken their toll on the powerhouse club of the past four years, and for the Lions to repeat their premiership success, they will have to fill the void left by the retired Alastair Lynch. Peter Blucher reports.
The Brisbane Lions were denied an immortal place in football history as four-in-arow premiers last year when they fell at the final hurdle. But this year there is a historical precedent that says they might not be the spent force many suggest.
The last side to win three flags in a row and then lose the grand final the following year was Melbourne in 1955-58. And it bounced back to be premier in 1959-60.
This is the challenge for Leigh Matthews' men as they begin a new era.
Age and the salary cap finally caught up with the Lions after their 2004 grand final loss to Port Adelaide when five players with a combined 12 premierships, 991 games and 1241 goals moved on.
Alastair Lynch, Shaun Hart and Craig McRae were longterm cornerstones, while Blake Caracella and Aaron Shattock filled important roles. All are gone. Likewise, six-year assistant-coach Gary O'Donnell.
The big question is how the team handles life after Lynch. He was the anchor point of the forward structure and the key to a game plan in which the team kicked long to the square at every chance.
Daniel Bradshaw, who came of age in the 2004 finals, will take over as the No. 1 goalkicker but he is a different type and Matthews will not want him anchored to the goal line.
So, to avoid a complete change of thinking, the search is on for a big body to fill a similar if less productive role to Lynch.
Untried Queenslander Daniel Merrett has done the job pre-season and could be given first chance. Otherwise, Matthews might vary his longterm policy and change ruckmen Clark Keating and Jamie Charman through that spot rather than off the bench.
It is folly to underestimate a spine of Mal Michael, Justin Leppitsch, Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw, and a midfield of Michael Voss, Simon Black, Nigel Lappin, Jason Akermanis and Luke Power. It's class-plus.
Also, the defensive group led by Leppitsch, Michael, Chris Johnson, Darryl White, Robert Copeland and Chris Scott, always the starting point of Matthews' team, is intact.
The list is top and bottom-heavy. The Lions have 18 players aged 21 or younger and 11 who are 27-plus. Also, there are 16 players with fewer than 20 games' experience and 15 100-gamers. Their fate may rest with the output of the middle group, and already the loss of Richard Hadley is a massive blow.
FOR THE LIONS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL
They need a good run with injury to key players. Their best is still as good as anything going around but they no longer have the awesome depth. They have a tough start without Brown and Black through suspension and they need to stay in touch early. A 4-4 start will be acceptable, but another Brown trip to the tribunal could be disastrous.

2rd - Port Adelaide Power
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/pow.jpg
If Port Adelaide can throw off its premiership hangover, it could be ready to challenge for the flag again, expecially with the return of key men Matthew Primus and Josh Francou, Len Johnson reports.
For a premiership side, there has been a fair amount of change at Alberton Oval. Alastair Clarkson has left the coaching panel to take up the Hawthorn role, taking the retired Damien Hardwick and fitness coach Andrew Russell with him. Tough on-baller Josh Carr has departed to join brother Matthew at Fremantle and Jarrad Schofield has also gone west, to the Eagles.
Against that, former Bulldogs coach Peter Rohde will be an asset as footy manager and former Demon Peter Walsh could slot nicely into Hardwick's role. Carr will be harder to replace, but Josh Francou is returning from two years off with serious knee injuries and Matthew Primus is back in the ruck. Two handy recruits, to use Sheedy-speak. The Power also picked up former Lion Aaron Shattock.
Not too much can be read into the pre-season form. Port accounted for cross-town rival Adelaide in the first round of the pre-season comp before falling to the Kangaroos. Expect that as defending premier it will give a good account of itself and you will not be too far wrong.
FOR THE POWER TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL
As a classic football club, Port must first avoid the classic premiership hangover. Assuming it does, the Power has the capability to again play off for the flag come September. Francou and Primus must represent as potent an injection into a premiership team as any over the past 10 or more years. Walsh looks an adequate replacement for Hardwick. Port, which has finished top of the ladder the past three seasons, should be close to that rank again.

1st - St.Kilda Saints
http://users.bigpond.net.au/goo/afl2005/logos/sai.jpg
The time appears ripe for the Saints to live up to their promise, with their combination of youthful talent and experience making them the favourites for the flag. But the weight of expectation - and how the team responds to it - might decide whether St Kilda can claim the ultimate glory, Jake Niall reports.
It's pretty clear that, whatever the bookmakers think, the Saints are the critics' choice for premiership favourite in 2005. The logic is compelling. They're a team on the rise, whose gun youngsters are entering the fruitful middle third of their careers, while the veterans still have some shots in the holster.
In 2005, Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball, Nick Dal Santo and Justin Koschitzke have the experience to take on St Kilda's seasoned premiership rivals, while Fraser Gehrig, Robert Harvey, Austinn Jones and Aaron Hamill haven't yet fallen off the perch. Premiership teams are made of such an intersection of generations.
The flipside, of course, is that St Kilda's window of opportunity for a premiership might never be so ajar, with the older group bound to decline in 2006. The other factor in St Kilda's favour is its competition: Brisbane Lions, still owning the most outstanding collection of players, are past their peak and battle-weary, while Port, too, has been up for four years - an eternity in today's volatile environment. The rising Cats and Eagles don't possess the forward firepower of the Saints, or as many seasoned bodies with finals pedigree.
From a structural point of view, there's a doubt over the defence, which is light on for class - hence the importance of Jones - relative to the midfield and forward line. Matt Maguire's sore groin, thus, is a concern. The greater query, however, regards the capacity of the St Kilda Football Club to stand up to premiership pressures and manage its affairs well enough to win a premiership.
Already there's some friction in the camp between president and coach, although such conflicts have been overcome by contending clubs in the past. The historic capacity for self-destructive, rock 'n' roll excess that makes the Saints a charismatic church also gives less gifted clubs cause for hope, and wary fans reason to doubt.
FOR THE SAINTS TO HAVE A SHOT AT THE GRAND FINAL
Like everyone else, they need to keep the thoroughbreds healthy. The powerful Riewoldt-Gehrig combination, in particular, must be intact when it counts. The elder statesmen such as Gehrig, Harvey and Jones need to retain their 2004 form as the younger core ascends.

OK just over 24 hrs till FOOTY TIME. Get them tips in!!!!!
Round one is the hardest round to preview, for obvious reasons. Here goes, but dont take my word as gospel (If you ever, EVER do that you must be crazy anyway!!)
Round 1 - Easter & Season Launch
Brisbane Lions vs St Kilda
Great season opener, both teams shooting for top 4 spots this year. Played up in Brisbane and that might be enough to tip the Lions over the line, although their preseason form has been ordinary.
Kangaroos vs Carlton
No real home advantage to either team here. Should be a tight scrap. To tight to call
Melbourne vs Essendon
Another tight one, Essendon in particular are very hard to pick where they are headed this year. No HG advantage to either team
Fremantle vs Port Adelaide
Geez. Last years premier goes to Fremantle... Tough AGAIN as Freo dont lose too many at home. Might give them the edge at this point as Ports preseasons been ordinary. Freos hasnt been great either though I dont think.
Sydney Swans vs Hawthorn
At last! Sydney should win this at home, Hawthorn appear like they are gonna have a tough year.
Richmond vs Geelong
New look Richmond, no real HG advantage, but I think the Cats should be good enough to win this
Adelaide vs West Coast Eagles
At first glance I'd say WC, but it's played in Adelaide so that evens it up a bit. Probably still say WC though
Collingwood vs Western Bulldogs
No real HG advantage... Pies have a depleted ruck division, and the Bulldogs with some new players and a new coach... Hard to call but probably narrowly lean towards the Pies at this point.
Definately stabbing in the dark this week.
I don't know if any of you guys saw The Footy Show last night but Warwick The Tool Capper was cringe material.
He came out dressed as a road worker holding a stop sign and stripped to the music of Cappercabana.
He did this in front of his 11 year old son and it was beyond absolutely pathetic and was cringe material at its highest.
I had a late dinner which was lucky to stay down after that crap.

I've seen some highlights but from what I've seen nothing illegal occured.
I guess then it's just a 'not in the spirit of the game' issue.
Is this the case?
If a player chooses to remain on the field knowing he was injured and the opposition players choose to 'test him out' because the injured player is basically telling the opposition he is 'fit to play'. Then the opposing players are not 'breaking any rules', correct?
Is this what happened?

Always a big game between 2 of the games traditional big drawcards. Both are bouncing off losses last week, and theres no home ground advantage. Regardless of where these teams are expected to finish this year (mid-ladder) it'll be played like a final. Good stuff.
Western Bulldogs vs Melbourne
Both teams come off impressive first round wins. Once again no real HG advantage, and this will be a really good test of how much the doggies have improved - Melbourne are no mug team and looked really good last week.
Kangaroos vs Sydney Swans
Played in kinda semi - neutral Canberra.. hard to say who this favors more really. Should be a good game though, The Kangas are aways up for a scrap and might worry the Swans a bit. Another tough one.
West Coast Eagles vs Geelong
WC clearly have the home advantage here, but this should be a cracker of a game between 2 top 4 aspirants. Bring it on!
Port Adelaide vs Brisbane Lions
Wow...Port at home in a replay of last years Grand final. What a fantasic round of footy!
St Kilda vs Fremantle
Saints playing a 'home' game down in Tassie. Freo looked sharp last week. Another tight call!
Collingwood vs Adelaide
Collingwood at home to Adelaide... Normally I'd say Pies to win this as they have a good record against the Crows, but with thyeir problems in the Ruck at the moment, anything could happen.
Hawthorn vs Richmond
No real home advantage.. I dunno. Both teams seem to be facing long winters..
Carlton 16. 14. (110)
Essendon 17. 4. (106)
Great game. Blues came from a long way behind to roll over the Bombers. A worthy addition to the great Blues/Bombers games of the past! :thumb:
Western Bulldogs 15. 21. (111)
Melbourne 20. 17. (137)
More kicking practice required Bullys :)
Kangaroos 12. 10. (82)
Sydney Swans 7. 17. (59)
Not as much as the Swannies need it though :wtf:
West Coast Eagles 12. 12. (84)
Geelong 8. 14. (62)
.....
Port Adelaide 11. 9. (75)
Brisbane Lions 11. 7. (73)

St Kilda 8. 11. (59)
Fremantle 8. 10. (58)
Collingwood 10. 15. (75)
Adelaide 12. 9. (81)

Dearest Goo and BOMBER,
Last week I tipped the Bombers and Pies and they both lost.
This week I tipped against them, and they still lost.
What's the plan this week boys? :D
If we don't beat Hawthorn this week then hell will freeze over.

BOMBER, what a class response. Let me see a Collingwood supporter say the above and give credit where it is due.
A great game and I too agree the maggots got it wrong to the Blue benefit. Makes the season for me. Bring on the Pies and I will be happy supporter. I have had to endure much heartache the past few years and finally the Blue see some light. Signing Pagan has given them a lift and they would not be here if it was not for his coaching. Must be a hard job to take over a sinking team, a battered club and turn things around.

If they still existed, you could have gone back through 3 years of AFL tipping threads here and seen a Collingwood supporter giving credit where its due.
Don't paint us all with the same brush.
Hi there Goo, coming from Sydney I have unfortunately encountered only negative Pie supporters. Apologies if the brush was too wide. I am new in this thread but I seem to be doing ok it seems. Just keen to see the AFL tipping cup come to the shores of Australia. Thanks for the heads up. Looks like it will be a good season and full of sparky posting from us all. Cheers and thanks mate.
Eh its cool. Its no secret we've got a share of dickhead supporters. Don't know if its proportionally larger than other clubs or its simply because we have a lot of supporters, therefore we have more dickheads than most.. I dunno..lol

I've always wondered that about you.
You don't seem to fit the Collingwood mould and are actually are great bloke who always looks at footy with a level head.
Are you sure that you have it right and secretly deep down want to join Sheedy's Army?
No dickheads in here though or maybe I haven't been in here a while. I know BOMBER is cool and so is Brian...thanks champ. I just think that many people believe that Eddie McQuire is the true face of a Pies supporter.

Coming from a Bombers freak this is how I feel about Ed.
I think Ed is a great president and he pulled Collingwood out of financial turmoil.I wouldn't mind him being the pres down at Essendon even but am quite content with how our club is managed.
Ed is also the brains behind the footy show which has given me great entertainment over the years on thursday nights. The AFL footy show is the original and it was Ed's idea.Without it the NRL guys wqouldn't of got the idea for their show up north there.
The one thing I take huge issue with Ed on is his constant claim that Collingwood is the most successfull sporting club in Australia.
They aren't even in their own competition.
Essendon and Carlton have won more flags and this year I know we have more members.
I don't understand Ed's logic on this at all and hate when he says it.
That irks me as well.
Sure Collingwood have a great profile and reputation second to none and much of this has to do with Ed's work and his successful show. I myself enjoy the AFL footy show much more than the league version. It has become stale, predictable and stupid. Footballers as entertainers is one thing but they must be also be able to sell the game. The AFL show has been indeed copied mercilessly by league. Ed though claims that Collingwood is Australias most successful does annoy me and it is misleading to new fans. Hello Ed, what about the Bombers and the Blues..

New Richmond Club Song:
Oh we're from Liquorland
Drive in a hurry
We're from Liquorland
In any weather you'll see us with a gin
Booze dribbling down our chin
If we're blind
Its coz we're behind
Then in our cars get in
Oh we're from Liquorland
We never stop until the copper's siren blows
Like Tigers of Old
We skull Toohey's Gold
For we're from Liquorland
(Blue label not Black)
We're from Liquorland
Oh we're from Liquorland
A bunch of pissheads
We love Liquorland
In any weather you'll see us with a gin
Drinking Bourbon or gin
When we drive
We blow point 05
And our sponsor chucks it in
We're from Liquorland
Never weaken till the final pub is closed
Like the tigers of old
We love our beer cold
Oh we're from Lqiuorland
Now that is fucking hilarious.
Ehhh.. In regard to Ed, I can see why anyone who's not a Pie fan would get shitty bout him. But from a Pie perspective its hard to knock a guy that dragged us outta the financial scrap heap and into the position we're now in. Only thing he hasnt managed to do in his tenure is get a cup in the trophy cabinet, and we probably got to within a Rocca wobbly point of that too... (bearing in mind Brisbane took the ball straight up from that kickin for a goal - had Rocca kicked that one, of course that kickin would never had occured)
The 'most successful' things been round before even Ed was there. Not sure what gives exactly there as its been a long long time since we held the most premierships (Essendon and Carlton both surpassing us in the 80s). But if you dont define what your measuring it with its just a bit of oneupmanship.. Guess we could claim (and these are off the top of my head, may not be totally accurate).. more total games won than any club, more finals appearances... more grand final appeances (lots LOTS more than anyone else. Pity we lost so many :) ).. recent profits, TV viewership numbers, aggregate crowd numbers... Blah blah blah but half the teams in the League could probably find similar arguments to support their respective teams successes.
Ed (and pretty much all Pies supporters) kinda like think when everyones hating us, we must be doing something right - perhaps thats Eds yardstick, and evidently we're killing 'em on that measure!!
But yes, in more general terms pretty much anyone would measure it by premiership wins. I'd narrow it further to last years premiers.. In the end thats the spot everyone wanted to be in.......
Anyways. Odds. Round 3!!!!!
Melbourne 1.77 A$
Geelong 2.08 A$

Round 3 Preview......
The AFL has dubbed this the 'Rivalry Round' in a sad marketing attempt. While there is some big traditional rivals facing off this week... some of the games... ehh..... Anyway
Melbourne vs Geelong
Yah. I dunno. ANyways. No home advantage to speak of, and 2 pretty good teams. Maybe they can start a rivalry? Im sick of saying rivalry. From now on Ill refer to it as a 'pisser'. For no real reason.
St Kilda vs Kangaroos
Not sure how this qualifies as a pisser either, but Anyways, once again should be a pretty pants-wettingly-tastic game. No home advantage to either team again.
Carlton vs Collingwood
Ah now this is a big big pisser. 2 old and proud rivals get to hack away at each other to fight out who finishes lower on the ladder. Carltons uncanny ability to shit all over Collingwood when they least need it should see them romp home! No HG advantage
Brisbane Lions vs Sydney Swans
Now these teams have had some nice games in the past few years, but I'm not sure this is pisser status yet. Anyways up in Brisbane, and the Lions are hard to clean up in their home bedpan, so yeh. Although Sydney have beat them up there a few times. So maybe. Eh. I dunno
Fremantle vs West Coast Eagles
A cross town Pisser! Should be a good game, and worthy of pisser status. No home advantage
Adelaide vs Port Adelaide
ANOTHER cross town Pisser. Port should win though
Essendon vs Hawthorn
Ahhh the great 80s Bombers/ Hawks finals... A true Pisser. And if last year was anything to go by, a VIOLENT pisser. Kinda a German fetish porn match. Hawks are so fucked even Richmond can beat them so the game wont be much. But Oooooh we might get a fight!!!
Western Bulldogs vs Richmond
This is NOT a pisser. Not to my knowledge. Its just a footy game. ANd it probably won't be a great one either. No home advantage to either side.

There is a small bit of modern rivalry between these two.
1. The Terry Wallace factor
2. Remember that game a few years back when Campbell and Knights stitched up Liberatore at the tribunal? The next time they played there was a lot of passion between the two teams. For the record the Tiges won by less than a goal (Sziller (go Lobethal Tigers) took a clutch mark in defense in the dying moments of the game).

This is why they are playing, the league has even said so.
Still not high on the pisser scale though.
As for the Kangas, saints,Demons and Cats,I think they were just left overs.
I suppose the Cats and demons both haven't won a flag since the mid 60s so there is some collaration there.
Yeh.. thought about the Wallace thing but was in too much of a stupid mood to really pay it much attention...
Collaration - don't ever play scrabble with me guys,I'll kick your arse with non-existent words like that.

St Kilda 14. 9. (93)
Kangaroos 15. 10. (100)
I didnt get to see this one, I belive it was pretty tight all day but the Kangas managed to keep their noses in front.
Carlton 16. 12. (108)
Collingwood 20. 8. (128)
Because (of course) I was watching this.... First half was pretty scrappy football, but Carlton ground out a handy lead. The game switched up a notch in the 3rd, with both teams finding a bit of touch. Carlton extended the lead out to about 4 goals or so halfway through the term and looked set.... Then the Rocca/Tarrant forward combo woke up from its 3 week coma and BOOM. Pies all over the top.
Brisbane Lions 11. 15. (81)
Sydney Swans 13. 9. (87)
Not as over the top as the Swans though... Brisbane were up by bout 6 goals at 3/4 time then the Swans just came from nowhere. The game sealed with an after-the-siren goal from Barry Hall. Unfortunately I didnt get to watch this game. Woulda been quite a treat for Swans fans
Fremantle 12. 8. (80)
West Coast Eagles 12. 16. (88)
Close all night too I belive, but thats really all I know of this one at this point of time.
What a great day of footy. 4 beaut games. Good stuff.

Carlton lose to Collingwood.
I was fortunate I was nice to Goo.
Well done Pies, you woke up in the 4th quarter and Carltons defence went to sleep. A good game. Swans win is always good and what is in the water at Richmond? Two in a row, call in the drug testers! I am sure the bells are ringing as I predicted.

Heres this weeks Preview
Kangaroos vs Collingwood
Kangas have been good good goodness so far this year. Tough lil unit. Pies played A pretty decent second half last week so if that form holds this should be a pretty good game. Kangas havent beaten Collingwood since 2001, prehaps its due? No home advantage.
Hawthorn vs Brisbane Lions
Hawks at home but... I cant see it happening for them against the Lions.
West Coast Eagles vs Western Bulldogs
West Coast at home should get through this without too many problems. Doggies have improved a fraction but still gonna finish on the wrong end of ladder methinks
Geelong vs Essendon
No home advantage. Cats have been a bit flat so far this year but the Bombers injury list is looking pretty nasty, and it could be tough for them.
Port Adelaide vs Carlton
Port got their butts handed to them by the Crows last week. Playing this at home and I would be suprised if they lost 2 in a row..
Sydney Swans vs Adelaide
Adelaide havent gone too bad so far, but Sydney at homes gonna test them out a bit.
Richmond vs Fremantle
Richmond have won a couple, and having this at home must be some kinda roughy to win another. Freos travelling record being occasionally dodgy and all. Probably be close, whoever wins
St Kilda vs Melbourne
Saints just havent got going yet, while Melbournes sprinted out of the blocks. No home advantage.

Should be a pretty decent game this. Ports at home, playing the Cats who are coming off a nice win.
Kangaroos vs Hawthorn
No home advantage here. Can the Hawks win 2 in a row? Probably not but least last weeks upset makes this a bit more interesting
Fremantle vs Carlton
Freo at home here. Hard to say what is gonna happen here, with both teams having erratic form.
Sydney Swans vs Melbourne
Swans are yet to impress this year really, Melbourne at home, coming off a loss.
Western Bulldogs vs Adelaide
Doggies at home vs Adelaide who have been the suprise packet of the year so far for my money.
Brisbane Lions vs West Coast Eagles
Lions at home, bookies favor the Eagles. Probably gonna be tight but I doubt Brisbanes gonna lose 2 in a row, less so with a home game.
St Kilda vs Richmond

That's a good run down mate,as per usual.
However there is on glaring omission and it's the big one.
Essendon vs Collingwood
The traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster is always a cracker and this year it is desperation stakes for both clubs.Probably going to be tight with Collingwood being hit hard with injury and the Bombers struggling for form.
Hard to lean either way on this one.

I saw bits of it. Wasn't quite sure I hadn't travelled off to some parallell universe where things are all 'different'... but yeh - I saw it.
However after yesterdays game where Collingwood were busted up and didnt really ever look like getting their shit together, then Yeh. I realised I was still on planet earth...lol
Eagles and Saints would have to be early faves for the flag.
Melbourne and Geelong just a step down from those 2.
We have a couple of Swans fans here who I don't want to offend but I would love to know their thoughts on the Swans.
This brand of footy the Swans is playing is deplorable and has me falling asleep every time I watch it.
I'm not talking about their results on the scoreboard,I'm talking about the style of play they use.
Paul Roos defends it by saying his team has skill problems,I couldn't disagree more. When you have the likes of Oloughlin,Goodes,Williams and Hall I just don't get it.
When they abandon this this negative footy, they seem to go alright like in the last quarter against Brisbane.
Anyhow this game style of Sydney's will do nothing to promote AFL in Sydney.

Shop around a bit, Im sure someones paying more :D
Anyways.. Round 6 time
Carlton vs Hawthorn
Well... It'll probably be close. Carlton havent taken off after showing some good signs in the preseason.. The hawks have dissapointed by not being as crap as everyone seemed to think they would be (me included!).. Hard to call.. no HG advantage.. Hmmm...
Melbourne vs Fremantle
Apart from one hiccup a couple of weeks ago.. The Demons are SMOKING and err.. Freos.. well they are getting by I guess. The main problem is they have to go play this game in Melbourne, and they are notiriously bad on the road.
Adelaide vs Kangaroos
Adelaide have been pretty good this year (excluding last week I guess) and should give the unbeaten Kangas a bit of a tickle in this game if they can rebound. The kangas do however have a pretty good record in Adelaide. So this is probably gonna be a pretty decent sorta game
Essendon vs Brisbane Lions
This will be interesting - the Bombers, at home, coming off a confidence building win vs the dissapointing Lions. Anything could happen, including Brad Scott sniping someone. No, serious!
West Coast Eagles vs Sydney Swans
With the exception of a 30 minute burst, the swans yaer has been ordinary, while the Eagles are sparkling. And this is in the Eagles nest. Would need some serious reversal in form to see the Swans tip this one
Geelong vs Western Bulldogs
Down in deepest Catland.. The doggies were good last week with a tidy win but I think, at home, the Pussies should handle this without too many dramas
Collingwood vs St Kilda
The Pies have been generally competitive this year, but simply dont have the cattle on the ground, with their captain, their whole ruck divison, and onehalf of their main forward structure all sitting in the stands. The Saints are building slowly and I cant see the Pies getting over them. No HG advantage.
Richmond vs Port Adelaide
Tigeys have been pretty good for the most part this year and Port have struggled a bit. Played in Melbourne and I think the Tiges have half a sniff here. More than I would have thought at the outset of the season...
Mmmm...I know we're haven't been too crash hot lately...but those odds look very tempting!

There is talk in the media over here that there is a rift in the club over the captaincy. Some players reckon Tredrea should be captain and its getting a bit nasty - though the club is denying everything.

No it means that I'm sick of players in The Essendon gurnsey who have had enough chances at AFL level for us at Essendon to know their not up to it.
We can handle losing but we want our kids out their getting game time to build for the future.

There is an article on the back page of The Herald down here that Paul Roo's has pulled out of a lunch where he was supposed to talk to representatives of the AFL about the developement of football in Sydney.
It seems Sydney's style of play has even been questioned by The League now and The Swans are ropeable.
I have a feeling we may be used as punching bags on saturday night.

Gehrig's suspension was a fucking joke and makes me wonder where the game is heading.
I hope you guys destroy Geelong.
Highlanders are poison and I've had enough of poison. :drunk:
Melbourne vs Adelaide
Could be quite the little game this one. Melbourne at home and on display in a Friday night game, will be keen to impress. Adelaides doing much much better than most would have expected.
Richmond vs Carlton
No real home advantage, tand the Tiges playing good footy. Carlton havent been so flash this year. For the second week in a row... I might tip Richmond!
Geelong vs St Kilda
No home advantage.. And probably game of the week. Should be a cracker
Brisbane Lions vs Western Bulldogs
Lions seem to be back in town after last weeks indecent assualt of the Bombers, and the Doggies - while so far this year competitive - are unlikely to crack a win up in the Lions den.
Sydney Swans vs Essendon
Both teams are struggling a bit.. Sydney at home might be enough to carry them through. If they drop the dorky stuff.
Hawthorn vs West Coast Eagles
Hawks.. going oK and its at home but the Eagles are hot stufff right now.
Port Adelaide vs Kangaroos
Uhh... Yeh. Port.. at home, Kangas coming off a loss... Kinda depends what Port shows up to play this week - so far last years premier has been ordinary.
Fremantle vs Collingwood
Fremantle at home should do rather nasty things to the woefully out of touch and undermanned Maggies.
I'm posting this half an hour after the game,I'm a little under the weather.
Congrats to Rove/Gibbo on the win. :thumb:

What happened?
I didn't see the game.
Hey Dave - good stuff from the Tiges mate, you guys would nearly have to be thinking of finals action now, wouldn't you?
Firstly, there is no excuse for Essendon's fadeouts in the last quarter this year and saturday night all credit to Sydney for puming us in the last quarter.
However when I see 50m penalties being handed out to the opposition for a player telling his opponent to get off up the ground,I am close to putting my foot through the television.
Mark johnson's words were "get up you fucking week dog".
The umpire comes in and goes "you can't call a player a weak dog",he then dragged him back for a 50 m penalty.
This is close to the most ridiculous decision I've ever seen in footy,in fact it is.
On top of that it seems now the umpires won't pay Lloyd a free kick even if he say were decapitated. They've got it in for him definately.

I'm loving the Tigers winning at the moment, but they've only shown one game on TV so far this year. Its a bit early to be thinking about anything other than next week - last year after 6 rounds they were 4 wins 2 losses and then didn't win a game for the rest of the year.
From what you saying, that 50m penalty is piss weak. Johnson didn't touch him or anything? Pretty harsh penalty. Sam Newman will have a field day with this on Thursday night.
I watched him yesterday with Gary and Brayshaw and all agreed it is close to the worst decision they've ever seen.
Sam's right,he thinks they grand stand and think they need to get involved when they don't.
No,Johnson didn't touch him or anything.
After the game Sheed's asked the question of whether or not we are playing in a Nun's Convent?
Gary Lyon said the umpire must be an animal liberationalist.
I don't really like bashing AFL officialdom but recently with decisions like this and players getting 2 week suspensions for love taps,I'm getting very angry with the state of our great game.
The fucked up thing is umpires are aloud to make mistakes, they are only human after all. However under the Gieshen reign they never admit to making any.
Every monday he comes out in the press and justifys every fucked up decision that has been made over the weekend.
I can't wait for their spin on this one.
I don't want this to come across as Essendon bias - we got a lucky break against the Hawks with the goal umpire,I'm just frustrated that an umpire can take the liberty of inventing a rule on the spur of the moment.Imagine if that happens in a grand final at a critical moment of the game,UNFUCKINBELIEVABLE.
Dave CanSing

Bad umpiring decsiions probably even up in the end. But a decision like that doesn't sound like a mistake - it sounds like just stupidity from the umpire. He should be dropped for that.

They are interesting odds on the Bombers v Dockers game.
Fremantle I don't think has ever beaten Essendon in Melbourne.
That and the fact this weekend is a big celebration for Sheed's have me seriously contemplating laying something out on those odds.

Carlton vs Geelong
Well Carlton would really need to turn things around to beat the Pussies, who are travelling very nicely thanks very much. No HG advantage
Hawthorn vs Melbourne
Hmmm. No home advantage. I'd say Melbourne though. For the most part they have been pretty impresive this year
West Coast Eagles vs St Kilda
Home ground should make the difference for the Eagles here. Match of the round probably
Kangaroos vs Western Bulldogs
No home advantage here. Man the Bullys made this tough by tipping the Lions ouut last week. Could be a good game
Adelaide vs Brisbane Lions
Struggling Brisbane travel down to the Crows nest. Intresting game.
Sydney Swans vs Port Adelaide
Swans at home hosting the reigning premiers, who seem to be getting back on track. Another tough one.
Collingwood vs Richmond
The good news for Collingwood is they are unlikely to play any worse than last week. The bad news is Richmond will still probably kick their arses in.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Fucko has made of the season at some stage during this year.
Being a little unknowledgable about the AFL world, but who exactly is this Maginificent Fucko? I think I've seen a picture of him and looks like a clone of Bozo The Clown...
He is Goo's mate and from what I can gather they hit the frothies together. :drunk:
Fucko makes me a bit nervouse. He could blow a bolt at any moment and bitch slap us all.
Fucko is an angry and unpleasant man. He lives in my shed and talks to himself a lot. Last time I tried to throw him out, he attacked me with a lawn edger.
Occasionally he sneaks into the house, and uses my computer. Then he drinks all my beer. And usually passes out in the kitchen, in a pool of his own vomit (or worse!).
It's really just not a good domestic situation at all. The missus hates him.
Anyway
St Kilda vs Adelaide at Telstra Dome 7:40 PM AEST
Saints at home... SHOULD win this.
Collingwood vs West Coast Eagles at M.C.G. 2:10 PM AEST
Meh. Eagles by a mile. Collingwood at home but it won't save 'em unless Jesus pops by at training tonight and fixes some cripples.
Carlton vs Melbourne at Optus Oval 2:10 PM AEST
No real home advantage, and I can't see any reason why Melbourne won't win it.
Brisbane Lions vs Richmond at Gabba 7:10 PM AEST
OOOhh this could be good. Brisbane at home should sneak in but they have been all over the place form wise this year. Possibly match of the round.
Port Adelaide vs Essendon at AAMI Stadium 7:10 PM ACST
Port at home.. I don't think the Bombers have a great record at AAMI from memory. Hard to say though, Port were pretty ordinary last week.
SUNDAY MAY 22
Western Bulldogs vs Sydney Swans at S.C.G. 1:10 PM AEST
Doggies have been improvers this year and should give this one a shake. However Sydney were pretty good last week and having another home game, should be able to hold them at arms length
Geelong vs Kangaroos at Skilled Stadium 2:10 PM AEST
Down in deep catland.. I like Geelongs chances this year and they don't loose too many down at home. Kangas are a pretty tough unit though. Should be a good one but Pussies for my money (HOO HAR)
Fremantle vs Hawthorn at Subiaco Oval 2:40 PM AWST
Ehhh cant see the Hawks winning in West Australia. Dockers by a fair bit.

That's one of those quirks in the draw - It is a Bulldogs homegame but they have decided to play it up in Sydney town to try and sell the name of the Western Bulldogs up there. The league likes the idea and offers cash to clubs that have the balls to do this.
St Kilda 8. 9. (57)
Adelaide 15. 13. (103)
See what happens when I try to be decisive Chewie?!!
Collingwood 18. 10. (118)
West Coast Eagles 15. 5. (95)
Wow... Pies were GREAT today. Makes me wonder what we could be doing this year if we had our top cattle out on the paddock. At any rate this painful period has seemingly unearthed a couple of talented kids, so in the long run, perhaps it might all work out OK. Eagles first loss of the year.
Carlton 13. 14. (92)
Melbourne 15. 20. (110)
Didn't see this, although from what I hear the Blues had their chances
Brisbane Lions 12. 11. (83)
Richmond 12. 15. (87)
Nathan Brown goal with 2 minutes to go pinched the win for the Tigeys
Port Adelaide 12. 13. (85)
Essendon 9. 12. (66)
From what I gather the Bombers at one point had a useful lead but just couldnt hold the Power back in the end.

Melbourne vs Richmond
Hmm. Richmonds been playing some great foorty, but I think they might be due to fall in a heap. No home advantage here
Hawthorn vs Collingwood
Both coming off upset wins last week, could be an intresting one. No home advantage. I give the Hawks the edge though as the Pies are still woefully undermanned
Geelong vs Fremantle
Pussies at home Vs the wildly unpredictable Dockers? Gimmie some pussy!
Brisbane Lions vs Kangaroos
Uhhhh shit. Home advantage should get the Lions home but wow. Who knows. This ain't the Brisbane we're used to, that's for sure!
St Kilda vs Sydney Swans
Saints have a few injury worries but must be favored to win this at home. Should be a good game though.
Adelaide vs Carlton
Adelaide at home, should win this. Travelling along nicely.
Essendon vs Western Bulldogs
Possibly game of the round, no home advantage, no idea who I'll pick lol
West Coast Eagles vs Port Adelaide
Unless THIS is the game of the round? Hard to give it that status with Ports form this year. Anyway Eagles at home...
(sorry this is so brief, done in a hurry)
My picks have been submitted, once again they are BRILLIANT!!!
Melbourne 20. 11. (131)
Richmond 11. 8. (74)
Pretty cruisy night for Melbourne. BUT OMG YOU SEE NATHAN BROWNS BROKEN LEG. Holy fucking duckshit batman
Hawthorn 12. 8. (80)
Collingwood 17. 6. (108)
Pies outlasted the Hawks to drag themselves off the bottom of the ladder. Small mercies!
Geelong 11. 16. (82)
Fremantle 14. 7. (91)
I officially give up. I cant pick Fremantle. I just can't.
Brisbane Lions 13. 15. (93)
Kangaroos 17. 10. (112)
Apparantly Brisbanes lost their last FIVE home games. Did I wake up in an alternatate universe sometime recently? :wtf:
St Kilda 15. 11. (101)
Sydney Swans 8. 10. (58)
By all accounts, the Swans were disgraceful. Didn't see it myself though.

Didnt see much of this. Did see it was pretty close for most of the day though

Western Bulldogs 17. 8. (110)
Nice lil win for the Bombers.
West Coast Eagles 27. 17. (179)
