Indy Review:

Dave opened and plain rocked! The guitarist did Eddie better than Eddie does...He was definitely on last night.......Dave flubbed a few lyrics and was not MR Chitter Chatter like Sammy but as far as bands go, Dave won hands down...PLayed MANY classics...The crowd loved it...

Sammy was OK..He gave people quite a few chances to go grab beers and take a piss which was different from Daves show where NOBODY got up and left....Sam did Give To Live and Eagles Fly which just killed any momentum he had going....
MA showed up for a few tunes which got the crowd rocking....

All in all, worth the money..

Great show all around. Dave and his band were on it the whole time. Young is one hell of an axeman, even if he does look like Wierd Al. He played the same setlist that he has played everywhere else. Not too many Rothisms, he just played and played and played.
Sammy's show was pretty good too. But he did talk way too much. Opened with Zep's rock n roll, which was a nice surprise. After a few songs Mona whispered to Sammy that she had to pee, so Sammy told the crowd that it was ok, that he had another bassist, and out walks Michael Anthony. The crowd went nuts (btw, about half full). They played on top of the world, 5150 and Cabo. Was real cool seeing him. Made you want the bros back even worse.
A great show all around. But it definitely left me wanting the real deal.
Also, they interviewed MA on Q 95 prior to the show, so it wasn't a big surprise. All they asked him about was Planet Us--no VH. He did comment on Daves show in Chicago, that he performed great, and is as good as he ever was. He commented that he hasn't seen him live since the '84 tour. WOuld have been really cool to see him take the stage with Dave.
Peace

The show in Indy was great. Dave ROCKED!! I have seen him 4x's on solo tours and this was by far and away his best performance!! He sang everything, except for not doing the pre-chorus in "Im the One" which after reading other posts for other shows, seems to be the norm...anyhoo..his band rocked and rocked hard! Dave was no frills 100 mph rock n roll! I thought it was cool that he didnt depend on his usual on stage banter...just music!! Same set list as mentioned but for someone who never saw the original all mighty, it was cool with me! I have never heard alot of those songs live before.Dave ruled...need I say more?

Sam on the other hand seemed to need all the gimmicks on stage. Dont get me wrong I like Sam, 5150 being one of my favs, but it was like role reversal, Sam doing the things that Dave made famous...chicks on stage, talking a bunch of crap between the songs and just bogging things down...he sounded great when he did decide to play. And Michael saved his butt...wonder how his show would go if MA hadn't appeared? It was the highlight for me! And to be honest his band was not that great I didnt think. I am a drummer and his drummer just didnt cut it...no groove at all!! But all in all it was a great show all together. BTW, Sam did not play Cabo as previously stated. No Right Now either..oh well!! I just once again thought there was some irony in the fact that Dave was no frill pure Rock n Roll and Sam needed all the cheesy gimmicks. Sorry Sam it has to be tough followwing that set list!! He even made mention to it and thanked Dave for doing the tour, which I thought was very cool!! If you are a VH fan worth the price of the ticket, but then again we got to see MA...hehe...

Come off Howdy Doody Mountain and join the fun boys!!!

Sammy should drop Give to Live and Eagles from his set list.

It totally ruins the set. (I guess it gives people a chance to take a leak. When he played those tunes at Van Halen shows, it was always a perfect time to either take a leak or get another beer. )

I saw the 1st show in Cleveland and it was awesome!!

And, after reading all these reviews for the other shows, I'm really hoping this thing keeps flying along and they add Buffalo, NY along with some other East Coast dates for the other people this way that don't get the chance to see them.
I can't imagine them ignoring the east coast on this tour.

I wanna see this show again!!!

Here's lazyman's review that he originally posted in Sam & Mike Rock Indy! Dave put on a A+ show !

Sam made a comment about "getting the Brothers up off thier asses to join in". Could'nt believe my ears when he said that. Sounds like Sam wants back in! Sam joked while Mike was onstage about how he was out here to audition singers for VanHalen. Sam also thanked Diamond Dave for putting on a great show and said he had a great band. Dave was totally on tonight, couldn't believe it! Never heard him sound so good. It was such a cool vibe tonight, everybody was having fun. You really couldn't compare the two. They both put on one hell of a show! It was a little wierd seeing Mikey walk out and play. Put chills on me. Even stranger not to see the brothers there with them. Dave played first. After he played I just keep saying to myself, the brothers got to get thier heads out of thier asses and get dave back! But after I saw Sam and Mike together, I had the same reaction, bring Sammy back! So either way I hope one of them returns. Sam's voice was loud and clear tonight as well, sounded great! The show was a 10!

You are right jimithing--they played Cabo before the show and not during it. I kind of lost track of who played what.
I do have to agree with an earlier post about Sam's band. Not bad but nothin compared to Daves. Sam's guitarist was not good at all. I was used to listening to Dave's man play, and Sam's guy didn't even try to copy Ed's solo's on several songs ( or he did and totally missed).
Anyone tape a show yet?

Dave looked good, sounded better than when I saw him play a club in Chicago in 1994, but he couldn't hit those high notes. I wish he would have played more of his solo stuff.. the "newest" song was from 1986 ("Yankee Rose"), so I felt I was just watching a guy who realizes his career was in VH. His jumping around certainly wasn't what it used to be.. including the leap off of the drum riser. Even the guy in the Roth shirt next to me said, "Man, that sucked!". But all in all a good performance, Dave is still Dave.

Sammy, depite what others have posted, I think did a better job. Better singing, performing. Yes, I DO think the Cabo thing is getting a bit old, but he still has so much damn fun. The high-light, of course, was when Michael came out.. the crowd went berserk! Vic Johnson is no Eddie, but so what?!? He's not in Van Halen, but holds his own. Again, apples and oranges.

Whoever you prefer, it's still a great time seeing 2 of the 3 singers from the greatest American rock band.

Do people just not get that Victor Johnson is NOT trying to copy Ed's playing?????? He's not going to "noodle" around. He's played the same way since he joined Sam's band. People..... Sam is NOT going for the VH cover band. Dave IS.

Indianapolis, IN June 2nd Concert:

Diamond Dave was AWESOME! The last time I saw him was in Indy on the 1984 tour. I thought it was 84 again! If he was back in VH, it would be the ultimate concert! I can't say enough. His guitar player was excellent! You have to give him alot of credit. Not Eddie, but who is? Randy Rhoads would be my 2nd favorite all time. It doesn't matter what Dave does people are going to bitch! What else do people want from him? You can just imagine Mike, Alex and Eddie up there and it gives you the chills! Great show!

Sammys show was great as usual. The reason I liked Daves show better is because I like the dave era music better. Nothing against Sammy. Seeing Michael play was a extra special treat! If Dave doesn't join VH Sammy is my 2nd pick hands down. I love Dave and Sammy! The question everybody was probably asking: Where is Alex and Eddie? Hopefully that question won't have to be asked in the future!

Dave

Dave went on first and I was very surprised to see the concert start promptly at 7:30. The place didn’t look very full yet, but the pavilion filled in after a little bit. Pretty much Dave’s set went as I had expected from reading the reviews of the other shows on here. Little interaction with the crowd for the most part, just pure rock and roll, one song right into the next. Dave was in tight black leather looking pants and jacket…..true to form, the jacket didn’t last long, and it looked like just like the 80s again, except with a bit less hair.….I don’t know how he can move around in those pants, but he sure can. I thought the crowd would have been a little more enthusiastic. I was in lower pavilion Section A, Row V, and things might have looked different from a different perspective. I’m not saying everyone wasn’t having a good time, I just excepted everyone to be ape shit crazy. It seemed to pick up towards the end of the set, almost as if everyone realized that this great act was coming to an end and they didn’t want it to be over.

Sammy

The video montage started with a lot of people still out and about…luckily I was back in time and didn’t miss anything. The video chronicled basically most of Sammy’s career, with a lot of clips from some of his music videos and some interview footage. It was mostly just an appetizer before the main course. They brought a curtain over the stage with Cabo on it, and then Cabo Wabo started playing up on a recording…..I would have liked to have seen the band open with this live rather than the recording as it is one of my favorite songs. Changing it up a little, instead of opening up with Red, Sammy started it off with a rendition of Rock and Roll, which was well received. I think the atmosphere at the beginning of Sammy’s set was very strong, about as strong as the end of Dave’s set. It cooled down a bit until Michael Anthony came out, and to me, seeing Mike play along with Sammy was the best part of the show. If I hadn’t known beforehand that Mike was going to be playing I think I would have lost it when I saw him come out on stage. I also would have liked to see Mike play with Dave too….maybe it will happen before the end of the tour??? Again, the crowd died down a bit until the encore, which consisted of only Dreams. I agree that the more acoustical version of Right Now isn’t really what to end the set with, but IMHO it deserved a spot in the middle of the show somewhere.

Opinions

I would have to say it would be hard to gauge which singer had the edge. I have the feeling Dave fans are going to say Dave had the edge, and Sammy fans are going to say Sammy had the edge. I would agree with those who have said that WE, the fans, have come out ahead. This tour may be the closest thing to a reunion tour we will ever get. Live it up while it lasts! If you are sitting on the fence about going to see this tour, go, you will not regret it later! The review in the Indy Star this morning gave Dave 3.5 stars and 3 stars. What I found interesting is that they thought Dave was more innovative and Sammy was more of a rigid tour. This goes against what others have said, and what I observed as well. Both sets have their own merits, and again I believe the overall winners are the fans. On a sad note, the newspaper listed attendance at 5,500 people out of a capacity of 24,000. Between sets I looked around a bit and it looked like they didn’t sell at least half of the upper pavilion. I found that to be discouraging, but after hearing about attendance at the first 2 shows, maybe Indiana is just a backwards place.
