Ok, I will start. Just got home, very late here in KS. I will not even try the set list, but it was the same as is has been all tour. Sammy opened and I thought did a great job. When MA came out the crowd went nuts. It was magical. Vic ripped on the gutair and Mona seemed to have a great time. 1/2 hour set change and here comes DLR. Skin tight blue suit, obviously not wearing his BVD's. Brian's gutair tech was having a terrible night. Half of Hot For Teacher - no sound - Solo intro for Ice Cream Man - no sound. Both DLR and Brian seemed to bet very upset about this. The tech kept changing the cord, but obviously that was not the problem. Anyway. IMO DLR sounded great also. He hit the notes and had the jumps. The highlight of the evening for me was the JD jack off. I went to the show with my wife of 11.5 years. She has not been to many concerts, but I keep her upto date. Anyway, DLR picked my wife to spooge on. I guess because she is of course hot, but also she kept her shades on and just looked at DLR like "Dare Ya!" Well he did it and she was soaked. I got my fair share, but she was head to toe JD.
All in all, good show, I think SH took this one. Mainly because of the tech problems DLR had, but also I think that like ST Louis, KC is more of a SH town. Don't get me wrong, this was a close one, and I will not be able to talk tomorrow. IMO don't miss it. Oh yea, almost forgot. Took 27 pics. They only allowed disposables and I was in the front row center so did not want to risk loosing my camera, so will get developed tomorrow and forward for posting.

It is now the morning after the show and I'm still pretty much wiped out. What a great time! Sammy Hagar came on first and really rocked the joint. They all sounded great and were having a lot of fun. Micheal Anthony came out and looked like he was really enjoying himself. It was good to see him on stage and having so much fun.

This was my first time seeing Dave live. I think his voice sounded fine and his band is quite capable. However, his sound crew should all be fired. They had trouble throughout the whole show.

All in all, a great show! [img]smile.gif[/img]

I just started to recover from my all night bender with Sammy and Dave last night. Sitting about halfway back on the center lower level, I didn’t really know what to expect. I love VH’s music all of it…(well except for VH3 but who can blame me?). Last night set started with a video montage of Sammy’s Career. The crowd was rocking from the first song, but really went nuts about 3 songs into the set when Runaround started. The momentum continued to build when Michael Anthony walked on stage, the crowd absolutely lost itself in waborita doused bliss. A lot of people have complained that Where Eagles Fly was a mood killer, but honestly it was more of a much needed break. The Waborita’s were fantastic, and the interaction with the audience was great, Sammy talked to the crowd like he really was happy to be there and the crowd responded in kind. They played pretty much everything I wanted to hear and looked like they were really having fun. During Sammy’s set 2 sets of risers held around 50 KC locals that had won a chance to be onstage with the band, Sammy interacted with them several time diving into the seats and even handing the lucky winners the Mic a few times. I hadn’t seen Sammy since the balance tour but this was the best ever.

After around 2 hours they had a 30 minute break to change stages. Dave appeared in a glittery blue suit and started with Hot for Teacher, the crowd started really into it, but the momentum kind of died about 4 or 5 songs into his set, by the time he got to So This is Love many people were heading for the gate to beat the traffic, most others were simply sitting down. Either Dave was having trouble remembering lyrics, or there were major technical trouble as he seemed to mumble a lot. He did attempt some kicks and got 3 or 4 of them, he also did one split from the drum riser during the close of the encore song Jump. Dave had very little interaction with the crowd other than to mumble something about KC once or twice and at one point he did make a comment about “Oh Beautiful for Amber Waves of Grain” and how you should change the words to that shit…rather ironic that he couldn’t say them correctly himself. Later in the show he did single out one woman in the front as a “Bonafide, Grade A, Kansas City Slut”, Dave’s band I must say was the best VH cover band I have ever heard though, his guitarist is absolutely amazing. I saw Dave by himself at the Ameristar Casino last year and must say that he seemed better prepared then, last night looked like he was just going through the motions.

In my mind the argument over who is better Sammy or Dave was easily settled last night. Sammy Hagar is the undisputed Heavy Weight Champ of Van Halen lead singers. I really think Sammy should close all the shows, having Dave headline ends up coming across like getting a light appetizer after the main course.

his new sound guy after he supposedly fired his last one must be as bad or worse than the first

Let me walk you through a little bit of the show. (It's almost 24 hours later and my ears are still ringing!) My buddy and I were 13 rows back, center stage. When the Cabo Wabo cantina opened and Sammy's video montage started, the crowd went wild and I got goose bumps. It's very interesting that during the interview (which obviously was very recent) Sammy refers to Eddie as a brother. Anyway, Sammy boogies out on stage and is electric from start to finish. Hard to believe that he is 56 years old. I saw Sammy last year in KC, but last night's show was dynamite. Something very interesting that I noticed...unlike the first leg of the tour, he didn't play Poundcake and, consequently, didn't show the drill going through Eddie's Frankenstrat. Maybe there is hope for the Van Hagar fans around the world! Michael Anthony was kickin' last night. He had so much energy, him and Sammy together owned the crowd. Vic Johnson, Mona, and the rest of the band are spectacular, as well. I loved the first half of the show and hope it comes around again!
Dave on the other hand wasn't as electrifying. I felt bad for his guitar tech, he took alot of heat last night. It seemed that the guitar was up too much during the start of the show and he got an earful from Dave. The guitar was absent during most of the solo in Ice Cream Man, as well. About Dave, he has an ego...this everyone knows. But does he know that he looks like a dumb ass when he showcases himself doing the martial arts? Frankly I don't blame Eddie for getting tired of him, I was tired of him after 1 1/2 hours last night. I thought that this show was postponed the first time because Dave wanted to be able to give 100% and not talk his way through the songs. I saw Dave last year at the Ameristar and it was 10X better then. Dave stumbled through his set last night, missing ques in songs, mumbling alot of words...it just didn't seem to professional. If I had one question for Dave, it would be "Why don't you sing a song the way it was mastered? There's a reason you released it the way it was mastered; because it sounded the best that way!" Dave's setlist was great and the band was unbelievable, but the vocal performance was sub-par. I'm not going to say that Dave is washed up, because the guy can be as popular as he once was if he loses the ego and works on his crowd interaction a bit.

Last night's (and overall tour) winner? Mr. Sammy Hagar.

(I, too, have 27 pictures that I’ll post soon…but probably not as impressive as the guy’s sitting in the first row!)

Sammy Hagar opened the show to a 3/4 filled Verizon Wireless Amph. In KC. The place holds about 18,000 but only KISS and Def Leppard have filled it to capasity that i know of. Anyway Sammy was actually pretty cool. I enjoyed his set a lot. He opened with "Red" then did "3 lock box" and other pre Van-halen tunes. Seeing Michael Anthony play with him was the shit. They went through the same set as in other shows, good show, I was pleased.

But the man my friends and I were there to see was Diamond Dave. By the time he hit the stage the place was pretty damn full. I'm guessing about 14-15,000 had piled in by this point and DLR brought it big time. I'd never seen the man before and thought he sounded great. He had on a slightly different outfit than he did on the 1st leg. Dave jumped and cascaded around and had the entire crowd sweating of classic =VH= nastalgia. Same set as OKC I believe, but man was I impressed. No one can ever tell me now that Dave has "lost it" or is "too old and sucks" Because on this night, it was all about rock's greatest frontman. As usual, he closed with "Jump" and that was a fitting end to the best concert i've seen in years. Thank you Dave.

Wow i find it hard to belive that Ice went to the same show, the crowd for Dave really was thinning out in fact it got to the point where when the encore happened a bunch of drunks in the front part of the lawn seats were screaming Sammy...Sammy, unfortunately it was during daves curtain call. I was really sincerely wishing it was going to go the other way, I was one of the ones screaming for a DLR/Van Halen reunion, but after last night unless there is a big change I just cant see that being anything more than VH's assured final nail in the coffin.

In my mind the concert in KC was fantastic! I rocked my ass off all evening! I was very impressed with David Lee Roth. He was having fun, and I was having fun with him. He brought back to life those awesome original Van Halen songs, and they sounded great! My review is not about how many were in attendance, or what the other concert goers were doing. It's about the music, and the music Friday night was kick ass! This show was one of my all time favorites!

Sammy was good but Dave was MOTHERFUCKIN' kickass. Sammy ain't no Sammy Davis, Jr. Diamond Dave is The Gigalo, The Atomic Punk, The Ice Cream Man, and Sinatra in spandex.

Come on dude let it go you dont have to find someother guys post from DLR web page and and add it a bunch of pro Sammy reviews. Take it like your boy DLR would take and while you are looking bewteen your legs just give us a big How Ya Doing smile.

Well I've had a few days to digest the Hagar/Roth show and here's the conclusion I've come to...

Dave's finished and Sammy better get back in Van Halen.

The only reason Dave had a crowd was because Sammy was playing with him and the whole double headlining bill hype. Sure, there are Dave fans out there who will disagree, but Dave has never been a great singer. Vocals is something that just wears down with age and his limited range has completely gone to hell. But we all know Dave can't sing, what he's known for is being the best SHOWMAN ever, so that's what I expected to see.

Well, all I saw was Dave grinning stupidly and standing in place. It was a most uninspired performance by Mr. Roth to say the least. After all the show reviews I've read, I fully expected to see Sammy blown off the stage. I just think there are too many Dave fans who are relentlessly holding onto the old image of Dave no matter how drunk and sloppy he is. He's just a dirty old man now.

To Dave's credit he tried to keep the show rolling despite THE WORST SOUND JOB I'VE EVER HEARD AT A CONCERT. Poor Brian...you either need a new tech or some new equipment. However, Brian floored me with his knowledge of the Van Halen canon and technically pulled it off better than anyone I've ever heard before.

The most clever moment of the show was during "So This Is Love" when Brian's guitar dropped out (again) right before the first solo. Dave quickly noticed the problem and started ad-libbing the melody while Brian comically dropped his head not believing his luck. It was actually a pretty cool moment.

However, the nod must go to Sammy who flat out rocked the whole ampitheatre. For a 56 year old, Sammy's pipes just keep getting better and better. Truly amazing. I didn't hear him make a mistake once through the whole show. If there is EVER a Van Halen reunion it will have to be with Sammy because he can still hack the live situation and I know Ed wouldn't put up with a slobbering drunk Dave. I've always wanted to see a Dave reunion, but I'm changing that now to Sammy because it would be a better overall show with Sammy singing...because...well...HE CAN STILL SING!
