Here is the video of his meltdown. You can't see him throw the monitor, but you can see him yelling at the sound guy and you also see him drag the monitor off stage.

I think people calling it Ed's "meltdown" is a little extreem...
I actually think its pretty classic that you take the piece of equipment you are having issues and no one seems to be able to resolve... and just chunk it down the stairs.

Dude I was there, up close, it was indeed a meltdown. Roth, Wolfie, and Alex looked like the guy in the movie that has to decide between the red and blue wire to defuse the bomb. Let's see how the next show goes before anything more can be said...
The show was killer up to that point.

Ed was really making it obvious that he wasn't satiesfied with his tech. All the shouting to the side pit and his arms waving and all. Then drag the monior off the stage and stormin off into the pit as soon as the last note was played. I mean Ice cream man was coming up so he had a 5 minutes break anyway. Every normal acting human would have waited and then clear the subject in that break.
I don't know what the problem was, but it couldn't be that bad.
I also play in a band and know that a bad monitor sound can really disturb but jesus give me a break. Sometimes I really am wondering what happened to our boy.
He freaks out about something not right with his monitor (what nobody in the audience can hear), but refuses to change guitar whenb he butchers whole songs with his detuned guitars? It didn't just happen on the Jump-mishap but on so many Ain't talkin bout love clips I heard so far.
Talking about losing touch to reality......

what hasn't been mentioned was that at the start of the show EVH took about 15 secs to plug in his guitar, he really struggled pluggin it in.

It seems Ed has had issues with his gear ever since the first show.
And this was the thing that flipped him off 'cause it was probably building up to this point.

It went way too quickly and I just wanted more, more, more. Great concert. But.....
Critical: The solo seemed choppy, disconnected and without the full range of sounds and depth EVH can generate. The reverb on Cathedral was way too delayed. Sometimes, the guitar settings seemed a bit like a garage band. Sorry to be so critical. I watched VERY CAREFULLY from the 20th row Wolfie's bass playing - frankly there were times when there was no sound coming from it and the bass was entirely drum-generated. Anyone else notice that? I thought the concert was for them, not the audience.

You nailed it. His tone (ever since Van Halen 3) has sounded more and more garage band.
It's as though he wanted to get past his super processed F.U.C.K and Balance tone and went the other direction.
When he played on those two albums, his guitar sounded great, but sounded very processed (which I really liked, in fact). Now, he seems to be trying him best to recapture the brown sound from yester-year......without much success.
Just my opinion.
This New Jersey concert seems to be the boiling point for him. Hopefully, he'll make some serious adjustments. Then again, he probably won't.

I thought the whole band was outstanding until the monitor problems. After that, Eddie was furious and it definitely affected his playing. His solo was a mess as he seemed to screw something up and try something else, going into and out of Cathedral because his timing was off. I saw Eddie in '82 and in '85 and he was SOOO much better back then. Again, he was outstanding for the first half of the show. I hear they may return in the spring and if they do, I hope they have their sound problems worked out because the show would be outstanding from start to finish.
As for '04, I was at the Meadowlands for that show and I thought Eddie was fine. He was very loose during sound check and even took requests from the audience of about 50.
Also, I think they should take I'll Wait off the setlist. Aside from the fact that rolling in keyboards on tape is freaking cheesey, the keyboard parts were taped in a studio - without the adrenaline flowing - and are played at a regular pace, not a frenetic concert pace. So the song, IMHO, slowed the show down dramatically.
On another note, when I saw them 25 years ago (Diver Down tour for my first ever concert and it was in that very same venue), the women were young and many wore tight black leather mini's with the fishnets. Not this time around. The women were older, heavier and homelier. And many of the guys there Saturday night seemed to be the type who crawled out of their mother's basements to get to the show. The people watching before the show was almost as funny as Eddie flipping out during the show.

Actually, Eddie's behavior reminds me of a number of people that I've worked with that are about Eddie's age and did a lot of alcohol, pot and cocaine in the '70's and 80's. I think all of the abuse has left these people with a split personality disorder; they can be your best friend one minute and snap at the slightest problem. And yeah, Eddie's guitar tuning had problems, but what did he expect after slamming the headstock into the stage.
Man, he was a freaking genius.

Dave has been saying "Look at all the people here tonight!" for 30 years. If you really want to dump your MSG tix, I'm sure it won't be hard.

Its a show, that what it is---a production. In 2004 they has it down to the same spot on stage when they were playin' kissy huggy. It keeps the show tight, that's why it is done, especially with a noob up there.

Better, how? Showmanship gone? Do you mean Roth didn't sign shit for the entire show? To each their own....
