The cheesy, comical grin and flambuoyant attitude on stage that so many people find charming and so "Dave", I just find flat-out annoying. It wasn't until last night that I finally realized that I'm just not a fan of his. To me, all the fake smiles and the holding the arms up in the air just scream, "look at me, LOOK AT ME...I'M BACK". I just have a hard time stomaching that kind of ego. I know that's just him...doesn't mean I have to enjoy watching it, though. He SOUNDED great last night and I think his voice has improved BIG TIME since I saw him in '02. So, for fear of ruffling too many feathers and getting bashed on here, that's all I'm going to say about him.

Thank you KT... I felt the exact same way. I felt that Dave tried to oversing some of the classics at our show.

Ironic.....The knock on Dave all these years has been his affinity for under-singing. Now he's getting dinged for over-singing ?
Poor guy...

Maybe he was trying to compensate for the poor sound on him, which i agree with. If you didnt know the words you wouldnt know wth he was singing half the time. The rest of them were awesome
As far as his antics, it was my first time to see a dave fronted vh, but that was exactly what I expected going in so it didnt bother me.
His story was a little campy, but a good break in the show. I laughed at someone near me who asked if he was going to sing "When Eagles Fly"
Now, some new music would be swell.

Two days to let it set in. It was awesome.
The evening started for me at 5 when they let us in. I could hear a little noodeling in the arena. We were escorted to a VIP room upstairs for food and drinks. All the while we could hear some of the soundcheck. The "tour guide" then took us down to walk around the stage and dressing rooms. Supposedly the band is usually finished with soundcheck before the fan tours start, but this time they were still there. They were playing........Outta Love Again!
I don't really need to comment too much on the sound issues since they have already been discussed, but during "So this is love" the feedback had Dave cringe. For those who questioned why Ed brought Wolfgang into the fray it was obvious with the close interaction. When everyone else around him may question his antics or give him grief, he can rely on his boy. The kid can flat out play. He seems like a quiet respectful young man. Wolf handed a young girl near me his sweatband. The little girl was thrilled.
Dave was in great shape. Not many 50+ men still have a 6 pack for abs. It was sobering however to be so close to these guys and see father time has visited them. I remember those vintage 80s videos and seeing the swagger and youth, but the crow's feet and graying hair is evident on our mighty heros.
When Dave broke into his story I noticed him tearing up and crying a bit on stage and made mention to my wife. He then told the audience how emotional it is to tell the story sometimes. I thought that was pretty cool probably not many in the arena from their perspective could see it but you could tell how "real" he was being at that moment.
I have some more photos, but thought you guys would like to see some of the better ones. It was a great concert, a moment I will always remember. For those folks who want to boycott you are missing a great show and to those who complain about the seat prices I can't explain how cool it was to be within 8' of the greatest rock band.

It wasn't the singing.....it was the emoting.
I've finally come to terms w/ what I experienced.
I almose decided not to post a review for fear of misleading people. There was nothing WRONG w/ Monday's show. It was great in comparison to most concerts available today. But for this Van Halen fan there were alot of things not right.
1st: The sound/volume was horrible. The first 4 songs were so muddy that Dave's vocals were almost unheard. I attribute it to too much midrange being overamplifeid. And I think the only reason it got better as the show progressed is that my hearing degrated to the point that I'll never hear those frequencies(sp?) again.
2nd: The tempo really bothered me. I would imagine things have been slowed down for Edwards joint issues(i.e. no more hummingbird picking). Slowing things a tad would just make sense here, but they have ALWAYS played faster live that in the studio. The shows' energetic tempo always seemed to always be building up to the high point, which for me was Eddie's solo. With everything happening at a slower pace, it felt as if thing were dragging and the solo was about 30 minutes late. For many people, this might not be a bad thing, but it drove me up the wall.
3rd: Dave's antics are enjoyable to watch from 100 yards away. The over the top facial expressions are necessary to be seen that far away. From 10 feet away it looks like it hurts.
4th: Eddies' shortened solo is obviously a letdown, but I've seen his long solos so many times that the length in itself does not bother me. It is his lack of enjoyment that does. He does seem to be having a much better time than in '04 as a whole and does love being onstage with his son. He even seems to be having a great time playing all the songs that haven't been played for 20+ years, but the guitar is no longer his love...it is his job. It just seems odd to see Edward Van Halen not be ONE with his guitar. And he cannot seem to get the volume swells for Catherdral right. Maybe it has to do w/ the joint thing, but nevertheless, it just aint right.
Overall, it just seemed to me that the guys are going through the motions. And I've never considered that phrase when talking about Van Halen.
I just have to say, if anyone has never seen them w/ Dave and want to....do not miss this tour. I don't think you will have another chance.

Lol.. the emoting? You are right.... I was entertained by his emoting some what though. Let me clarify what I said Lode... As far as his over singing.. it wasn't over singing like voice wise..... he just tried to throw in too much extra crap.

As Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden once said, "you have to be bigger than life when you are on stage." For all of the negatives people want to throw on Dave about his supposed antics, he is by far more subdued than in previous years.
Dave was enjoying himself. Eddie was enjoying himself. The two were interacting well with each other. If people want to nit pick and critique then there isn't much more that will change your mind. It was a live rock concert not some studio spit and polished product.
