I've seen VH 9 times, 4 times with Dave (80,81,82,84) so like everyone else, I was really pumped to see this show.

Overall, they did not disappoint. It was clear Dave was concentrating on nailing the vocals (which he did), he was physically way more static on the stage than I've seen him in the past (Sam & Dave etc), but goddamn, that guy is in shape.

It's also clear Ed had a bad night. The band was mostly tight (I'm the One stands out as a particular favorite) but Ed had trouble with Little Guitars, Mean Streets and as others had pointed out, his solo..it was just plain 'ol not good (and yes, I play guitar). This isn't about speed or improvisation, he was clearly struggling with some of the playing (Women in Love intro) and definitely with volume swells in the upper frets and getting any kind of audible volume out of plucking at the trem springs or the strings behind the nut. I'm sure this solo will show up on You Tube, so before someone flames me, I'd only ask that you watch the Philly solo and then the Worcester solo, there is absolutely no comparison from a player or technical standpoint.

I'm actually one of the few that likes I'll Wait, but it really didn't work for me during this show...I would love to see them dump that and ATCWR and toss in The Full Bug, Hear About it Later or Girl Gone Bad.

Plus he played two more hand striped Charvels, one for I'll Wait (White & Black) and ATCWR (Black & White), coming soon to an online auction site near you.

One last thing....am I the only one who swears Michael Anthony's voice could be heard during the chorus of Jamie's Cryin'?

I was hesitant to bring this up given the reaction to the Ed criticism. I'm not saying they piped recordings of Mike in, but I wouldn't be suprised if someone off stage was singing backups. I saw Ed get to the mic late and also completely not even try to sing the harmonies a couple times and yet they sounded perfect and evenly mixed. Not complaining, whining, boycotting or anything. Just stuff I noticed.

Better sound than Mohegan Sun that's for sure. Anybody want to back me up on that and confirm its not my imagination. The sound in CT was pretty awful. This sounded clearer by a wide margin. I had awesome seats 16th row in front of Ed right near the ring. Dave walked right and Wolfie seemed to miss his cue to hit the ramp as he only went about a 1/4 of the way and ran back to the stage. Ed of course was chained to his rig like Eddie on the cover of Iron Maiden's "Piece of Mind" album.

Overall, I enjoyed this show much much more than CT. I have seen this show 3X this tour, Charlotte, CT and now Worcester and Charlotte was by far the best. What I will say is that I have reached the conclusion that this stage setup sucks. The band doesn't use it and it holds people away from the show. If they were more like U2 in their use of the ramp perhaps my opinion would change, but they only came out for a few seconds the whole night.

I think from now on, if my choices for concerts are Mohegan Sun or Worcester, I'm headed to Worcester from now on. Except for the overwhelming stink of burnt sausages that permeates the air throughout the arena, pretty good place to see a show. I couldn't scrub that stink off me. I hadn't been their since 04.

i went to mohegan n worcester as well. Eddies guitar was way to loud @ mohegan,,,worcester the sound was blended better,,i wouldnt say mohegan was bad, just not as good as worcseter. i had 4th row sec 2 about 8 feet from that s ramp,,i was a tad right of dead center stage, i saw them in 82 and twice in 84,,,,i think we all have to give them credit for sounding pretty damm good being that its been 22 years or so. overall i was very happy with both shows,,i would def go again. eddies cathedral needs to be little louder like back in the day.

ROCKIN' LIKE IT'S 1984

WORCESTER— Van Halen’s return to the concert stage with singer David Lee Roth back in the lineup after a 22-year separation proved to be not so much a reunion show, but rather a redemption show.

In a crisp two-hour performance last night at the DCU Center, Van Halen reclaimed and restored a catalog of arena-rocking gems perilously close to being lost to bad blood, infighting and the arrival of Sammy Hagar. The Van Halen of 2007— which also swapped out original bassist Michael Anthony for guitarist Eddie Van Halen’s 16-year-old son Wolfgang — revived not just the hits but the fan-beloved deep-album cuts from the six records Roth sang on between 1978 and 1984. Sure the fans expected big things from the hits, but when songs such as “I’m the One,” “Romeo Delight” and “Little Dreamer” ably contributed to the pop-metal pounding, there was little room for debate as to which era of Van Halen has more fire power. In one fell swoop, the Hagar era from 1986 to 2004 seemed like little more than an annoyance.

The band appeared in top shape as it delivered the two dozen songs and assorted solos that made up the concert. Roth kept a lid on his infamous gift for banal gab, preferring instead to simply grin and preen away the night as Eddie Van Halen uncorked one mind-snapping guitar part after another. Make no mistake: Whoever sings for Van Halen has to understand who runs this band and it is the guitar god. Brother Alex Van Halen was likewise monstrous behind the kit, and young Wolfgang more than held his own (and the teen had the sold-out crowd in his pocket once the video cameras homed in on the “Red Sox World Champions” sticker plastered to his bass and broadcast the image on the huge video screen behind the stage).

Van Halen opened with “You Really Got Me,” The Kinks cover it claimed as its own on one of rock’s classic debut albums. The band would play seven more songs from that album before the night was over, including a version of the acoustic blues “Ice Cream Man” that allowed Roth his one shot at spinning a yarn as he explained the way he would play the song for a girlfriend back in the early days of the band.

Beyond that, Eddie Van Halen’s guitar did much of the talking. Snippets of “Crossroads,” “Smoke on the Water” and “Magic Bus” popped up in the guitar frenzy, but Van Halen’s original work made the case that it, too, belongs in the canon of classic guitar bits. Whether giving a clinic on his patented tap-style of soloing or simply unfurling sheets of blistering riffs, Eddie van Halen played with a precision and passion absent from the display he put on when last in town with Hagar in tow back in 2004.

The band employed all the trappings of rock spectacle, yet its spirited rips through the mindlessly joyous “Hot For Teacher,” “…And the Cradle Will Rock,” “Panama,” “Unchained, “ “Atomic Punk,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love” and “Everybody Wants Some” would have been just as successful had the band been playing upon a bare stage.
