Default Pretty solid show!!

This was a great show where EVERYONE looked really good. Ed's playing was as good as I've seen in a dozen years, Wolf continues to slowly create a personality on stage, Alex is Alex, and Dave hit a few notes that truly impressed me. I thought that the Sac show was good but this may have been technically better. They killed on HFT this time and really put a little extra attitude in some tunes. The song list was exactly the same as before with no changes. Ed showed off a couple new Art Series guitars and Wolfie played a short scale bass that was striped like Ed's black and yellow one for Little Guitars. Ed played a new quilt top Wolfgang and I noticed there is a good sized ding in the top of his ivory guitar(bullshit detail, I know). A couple negative notes; it sounded like they were out of sync a couple times, just off slightly. Also, Ed's solo was the shortest I've EVER seen live. Solid and good but short. I'm really happy I was there for this show and would not have missed it for anything. I thought that the Reno crowd showed good energy for once! Good times...

Okay I posted my stuff in the wrong thread, before I saw this one. Hearing's finally coming back.

Must agree with Rockbottom's comment about Edward's solo. Pretty short but good. His playing always amazes me. Definitely better than 2004.

Overall, the show was pretty good. Missing Mikey's backing as far as vocals but the Wolfman came through, better than I thought he'd be altho I didn't pay too much attention as I was watching the Diamond One. He seemed genuinely happy to be there, unless it was part of the show.

The break definitely did them good. Edward looks healthy, his playing is spot-on. The show definitely had touches of the Diamond One, from the floating blimp to the confetti. It was nice to hear the old stuff sung by the only one who can sing them. He talked through some of it as expected, and his vocals were hard to hear, at least for me. One thing I noticed about the crowd was that a lot of them didn't really seem to know the stuff they don't play on the radio, but they came alive again once they played the radio tunes. I enjoyed hearing the stuff they don't play on the radio. I figured them to be casual VH fans - well most of them. A lot of young ones too.

My daughter liked the show too. I'm glad I got to take her along. Oh yeah, one other thing I didn't notice until I looked at it better - my tee doesn't have Reno listed on it. Guess b/c it was an added show? Oh well.

If I think of anything else I'll post it. Waiting for evans to report in. My home computer keyboard is acting up big-time so off to bed for me. Whatta night!

I finally made it back to the boards! I got home around midnight and had to get up at 5am to get ready for work...so I waited until I got to work to post my review.

My source wasn't able to come through with the closer tix that she promised but it all worked out in the end. I called Smithjc about 6:40pm to let her know it wasn't going to happen (I was going to sell my $50 tickets to her if I got the other ones for free.) She had already picked up some tix for $50 so I didn't feel bad after all. I'm glad she was able to go after all and had a good time! I knew she would! My bro-in-law and I ate at the Silver Peak brewery in downtown Reno (2 blocks from my work) and had a couple of beers to get things started. At about 7pm we drove over to the Silver Legacy casino parking garage and headed over to the Events Center. I made a bee-line right for the back of the Events Center to see if I could find Danny, the truck driver. He was hanging back there smoking a cig so we bullshit for another 30 minutes or so. He said he wished he could get us in backstage and get us some good seats but I told him that's not why we were back there. He was a cool guy and took the time to talk to me earlier in the day so I just wanted to introduce my bro-in-law. We shook hands and headed into the Events Center. Our seats were in the back corner of the joint which is NOT BAD AT ALL since they only hold anywhere from 7,000 to 9,000 people. Just a heads up...ANY venue in Reno is a good venue! The opening band was a bunch of white dudes playing some reggae/dub songs. I think they were called Pacify and they're from Georgia. They thanked David Lee Roth and Van Halen a few times for letting them be there last night. I'm going to try to look them up. I'm into all types of music and they had a good vibe.

I got a call from my source for better tix right after the opening band was done. She waved us over to their section because the whole row was comped tix and they were the only ones in it! It was about 150 feet from the stage and on Wolf's side. We figured we would hang out there until someone booted us. We were there the whole show!

Now, I've seen VH thirteen times with Hagar and Cherone over the years. This was my first time seeing them with Roth. When the lights went down and Eddie started wailing I got those familiar goosebumps! I was on my feet and rocking from start to finish. Like others said here, same setlist as before. Woflie did an admirable job but I couldn't help but think what it would have looked and sounded like with Mikey there. Eddie looked damn good! I swear it's not the same guy I saw in 2004...he looked and sounded more like the Ed from 1998! He seemed like he was on a mission last night. The interaction between him and Wolfie was awesome and that's why I accepted the deal. Nothing like being up there with blood! Al was slamming the skins as usual and didn't miss a beat...literally! Dave seemed to run out of gas about half-way through but after Al's solo he came back and was on freaking FIRE! The highlights of the night for me were hearing HFT, Panama, and Everybody Wants Some! Unfuckingbelievable! From what I could see, Wolfie used the drill once and Ed used it once during his solo. That was it.

Bottom line is this: I got to relive my youth last night with 3/4 of my favorite band in my own backyard, 150 feet from the stage, for $50 freaking dollars! You can't beat that!

Well there you are! Was wondering what became of you.

Al's solo was amazing, he's definitely still got it. Guess this is what they needed to play the old stuff, but at least Edward's happy playin it. His guitar had that sound from the first album, very nice. They blasted those tunes and after each one I was just amazed. The vocals were a bit weak but the musicianship more than made up for that. Mikey was missed - at least by me. Everybody else had a blast from the sounds of it. My hearing's finally back to normal this a.m. I feel like I was out all night minus the hangover since I didn't drink. T/G!

I wouldn't have went if we didn't find those cheap tix tho. At the box office all they had left were the $80 and $150 seats and I definitely wasn't going to shell out that much. I don't know how they can play the same setlist over and over, seems like they'd mix it up at least a little bit.

They got a nice welcome back from Reno. I never did see that sheep........

btw - Thanks evans for thinking of me with those tix. Glad you got to get closer to the stage.

Yeah Mean Street was awesome! Hearing the old stuff sure brought back a lot of memories. The sounds Edward gets out of those guitars still amazes me. Those VH bros. are sure talented, and they've still got it.

btw - I'll be making up for the lack of alcohol this weekend.

Hey guys. I put some pics up from my recon mission yesterday before the show. There is a pic of Danny, the truck driver. If you get a chance to talk to him, tell him Brad from Reno says "HI". Just tell him I'm the guy that bullshit with him for an hour or so a couple of times on the day of the Reno show.

Something interesting I noticed: On the fifth pic, the one with the HD monitors, I zoomed in and saw that one of the monitors was labeled "VH-1". Could we be seeing an HD show from this tour pop up on MHD?? Only time will tell! ENJOY!!

Default Awesome Show

I was actually lucky enough to catch VH with DLR back in 1984. I was a little surprised when I heard they were coming to Reno again with Reno Events Center being half the size of all the other venues they're playing on this tour for the most part (Thank the Casino's who run the venue as I think they pay top dollar for concert acts hoping it will attract people to come up for the weekend to gamble) ... Even tho, this was being labeled a warm-up show, the show was awesome and the band was in prime form. They played alot of stuff for hard-core fans even I wasnt really expecting (Little Dreamer, Romeo Delight, etc) Alex put on an awesome drum solo and Eddie's guitar solo was short but great (i'm sure most Eddie fanactics have a heard a million of his solos over the years anyway). I was kinda hoping Wolfgang would pull off a little solo but oh well. David Lee was the epitome of a Rock and Roll frontman, part-PT Barnum, part-Liberace and then some, it made me realize what made Van Halen GODS to begin with. While Eddie still gives me goosebumps with his playing, David Lee always made VH larger than life. My only complaint was the sound was a little muddy. I've seen many acts here (Tom Petty and Aerosmith both had crystal clear sound) so I can't blame it on the venue but all-in-all was an awesome show by an awesome band.....I can't wait until they put out a new album of original material..>ROCK ON!!!

Review: Van Halen pulls off 1984 time warp

By Jason Kellner • April 18, 2008

Reno got rocked like it was 1984 Thursday night at the Reno Events Center, when Van Halen plowed its way through nothing but hits (and a lot of deep album cuts) from the David Lee Roth-era of the band.

Fresh out of a stint under a doctor’s care (again) for Eddie Van Halen following the cancellation of several shows in March, the band stopped here as a warm up for the resumption of its tour Saturday in Las Vegas. For the most part, the band sounded and looked pretty good.

They’re well-preserved, with Eddie and David both looking rather ripped for men in their 50s. In fact, 16-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen, subbing on bass for Michael Anthony, was the heaviest guy on stage. But who better to replace Anthony than another Van Halen? The young dude is a fine bass player, great backing vocalist, and he even helped dad Eddie work his wah-wah pedal.

Playing from the same set list that’s been used since the reunion began last year, the band opened with the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” while Roth strutted down a ramp to the stage in some leather outfit possibly borrowed from Siegfried and Roy. They rambled through favorites like “Runnin’ With the Devil,” “Beautiful Girls” and (possibly one too many) lesser-known songs like “Little Guitars” and “Romeo Delight,” all atop a fairly simple stage with a drive-in size movie screen and modest lighting.

Despite past animosity between David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen and a couple false starts in the reunion department in the past 10 years, there was no bad blood to be seen on stage. Eddie and Dave both wore genuine grins, with Dave’s huge, clown-like permagrin looking a bit creepy at times.

“Better late than never, huh?” Roth asked the near-capacity crowd, before jumping back into 1978’s “I’m the One.”

“We’re a new band with the same s---ty attitude,” he added, letting everyone know that it was the original, sex-crazed party band that was on stage that night. The last time Van Halen was in Reno, it was 1992 during the Sammy Hagar era, but not a note from the Hagar days was heard.

The band was in top musical form, with Eddie ever the astonishing guitarist and brother Alex pummeling away on his massive drum set (why do those showy drummers always have a gong that’s never played, anyway?). Even Roth didn’t hold back, save for a few of the banshee screams that went missing. The band played every song in its original key, evidence that Roth can still hit the highest highs, or at least back off subtly when he can’t.

But when the keyboards were called to duty on “I’ll Wait,” and later for the encore of “Jump,” it was like the band was ashamed of the sound so heavily used in 1984. The keyboard sounds were heard, but nobody was playing them – at least no visible person.

But the crowd stayed on its feet the whole time, a sure sign that this band can still whip an aging fan base into a frenzy. Nearly two hours, a drum solo and guitar solo later, the band didn’t seem to let up. They closed with “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love” and “Jump” amid a confetti storm, a giant inflatable microphone and not exactly a whole lot of jumping. Roth pulled out only a few helicopter kicks during the show, but not the high-flying scissor kicks he once did.

I’d say the band pulled it off, but I left feeling just slightly underwhelmed, particularly with ticket prices maxing out at $150. It’s a good thing they’re getting this reunion out of the way now, because 10 years from now, it would look pretty silly.

A lot of the crowd seemed like casual VH fans, only know the radio stuff. Those rarities were awesome. The radio station played the entire setlist after the show, but they had to explain which albums the songs were from and all that. Stuff we already know.

Well since mine and Tim's posts were invisible to some yesterday, I just went through and deleted every post that WASN'T a review. Please don't post in these review threads unless you are reviewing the show the thread was created for...meaning YOU WERE THERE! Clear enough? Thank you.

The band was pretty tight, the only gaff of the night came after the middle section of "Romeo Delight," but I'm sure 1/2 the crowd did not even know. Ed played very well and as mentioned, his solo was relatively short, only 7 minutes. It was basically the Eruption intro, noodling on Cathedral and some quick picking on the way out and that was it. Roth seemed positively giddy to be back on stage, and was full of energy. Overall a good show to an enthusiastic crowd and I believe in the end it sold out. On a side note, I believe Brett Michaels was wandering around the concession stand, weird looking short dude.
