I've heard 10-year-old kids on YouTube do a better job. Amateur at best.

This has been discussed at length here. Survey Says!:
Pretty lame. Even though he's joking. The thing is, he jokes about a lot of covers:

And at the point when you can't even get thru the whole tune
(or the best part), the joke's on you. It's just frustrating when
I know 20 guitar players who rip Sweet Child a new one every time.

well he's having fun, his fans are having fun. He's also a berkeley grad, so I think if he needed to do these covers spot on he could. People that enjoy his music aren't the types that are sitting at home "chasing tone" anyways.

I couldn't listen to all of that rendition of 'Panama'. Sounds like a garage band.

I can't tell if they are really that bad or if they are actually making fun of Van Halen.

For their sake, I hope it is the latter.

I get it. But even as humor it's still pretty lame. Green Day does the same
kinda shit.
If that's what you're after just go see Steel Panther or whatever it is.
At least those guys can mock the songs properly, I imagine.

Indeed it is Architect. I think it's pretty obvious that he's just goofing around. The big clues for me were the smiles and laughter.

John Mayer is a monster guitar player...the fact that he's taking a timeout to jam out some sloppy covers while goofing off on stage doesn't mean a whole lot. Some of you guys are a tough crowd...you have to play note perfect even when you're goofing around...jeez.

It appears that the famously right-wing musician, seen above sporting a wig-mullet and full body beard, had made derogotary comments about the girl's father, a communist party official from Ghangzhou.
Just moments after this photo was taken, the plucky girl, whose name remains unreleased, socked the Nuge with a straight left followed by a roundhouse kick, as she screamed "You don't lock. You don't loll. You illelevant".
Sources say that the Nuge will still be performing his scheduled concert on his poorly attended "American dickhead" tour, tomorrow night. Controversy has followed the tour, which includes live on stage killings of illegal aliens. One unwilling attendee, named Jason, of Cuban - Jewish ancestry, said quite succinctly; "Ted's a fag".

The problem I have with this is that you most likely wouldn't see JM messing around with a U2, Springsteen, or any blues band cover. Now I can see him screwing around in the same matter with a Bon Jovi song but nothing by the Police.

Its free game because its a hard rock band that was around in the 80's.

Take VH for instance. When they did a cover, it was usually their interpretation of said song. They did it in their style and usually it went over well. If they had done a version of Purple Haze and were going through the motions by not taking it seriously, people would say it was disrespectful.

Mayer and his band should have done a better job.

yeah but I don't see him "messing around." (ie making fun of Panama or VH) Seems like they decided to pull Panama out of their ass and play it because it was summertime and they wanted to have some fun. It's not like the singer was making up lyrics to make fun of the band. These guys were just jamming out a song.

I think some people are reading a bit too much into this.
