I think the vocals on IAT are pretty cool sounding. The melody during the verses is BADASS. And the chorus is VH all the way. But the music is kind of simple and basic.
But to compare it to CF is like comparing Kraft Mozzerella to Fresh Mozz from Italy.
CF is ROCK AND ROLL. 4 guys playing together and rocking out!!!
IAT is 4 guys playing individually trying to make it sound like a cohesive unit

I think I liked the "idea' behind IAT more than I did the song. It really fired me up when it came out. Now I listen to it and it's empty (empty promise). Listening to it, I still like it, but it's a bit of a clunky song, as are all 3 from BOBW. Not smooth like VH use to be. Sounds forced.
I can't say that about The Foot's album. Sammy's lyrics are inconsistent (soap on a rope to me, as much as I like the song, I hate the lyrics). But the music flows better to me than those 3 tracks on BOBW. I don't see what a lot of you guys are seeing, I guess. But maybe I'm letting the history of what happened weigh in on my opinion (?).

I prefer Eddie to Joe. After Eddie, there is no one behind him for miles to my ear.
That said, IAT is certianly Eddie. The problem is it seems like he just plods and goes nuts through the whole song. It's rough, erratic and Sam's lyrics clash with the guitar work. But I like it nonetheless because VH's sound even when they aren't clicking, sounds great to me.
I find Joe not as agressive or dynamic. Eddie kicks down the door, Joe knocks and waits for you to answer.
CF is a great group effort. All the intsruments and voices meld perfectly. The other part is that it doesn't have the pressure of comparing to former efforts over the last 3 decades. CF's second album will have much greater expectations since we now know why we like it and expect it to be as good or exceed their first effort.
Unless CF really laid an egg, musically, they had nothing to lose. Every VH effort has to stand up to their previous work which is why this comparison is tough.

Personally, I prefer just about any CF song over any of the three BOBW songs except maybe Learning to See. I thought that was kind of cool and different. Then again, we know what kind of state Ed was in during BOBW and working with him could not have been the most creative of environments. Sam has stated that it was incredibly frustrating and that they had to finally give up and settle for only three new songs. Not a good omen for the tour either...

I was listening to It's About Time and I realized something. Back in 04, I was truly excited for new music from Van Halen. (For the sake of this thread, I won't go into the other two tunes, though i liked (not loved) them.) Anyway, I thought the song was a solid effort, but not great. Over time it grew on me the way Van Halen tunes do, and for a short time, I even loved it.
When I listened to it today, something really stuck out for me. Overall, it's as good, if not better than anything on the Chickenfoot album. Of course, this is my opinion, but pick your favorite Chickenfoot tune and then play It's About Time. I'd be surprised if It's About Time doesn't come out on top in this little experiment.
The thing of it is...I love the new Chickenfoot. I really do. It's been in my car CD player for more than a couple of months. And I bought the new release with the DVD. But if I'm being honest with myself, I like It's About Time better.
I think that Eddie is just better at writing songs. I actually think that this is where Eddie might be underrated. I know he can shread. But the man also can write a song.
The problem is he hasn't or won't write new ones anymore. Damn it. So maybe he will someday. Or maybe Joe is just getting warmed up working with a band and collaboratively writing songs. Either one is a bonus.
Rock on.

Ed writes guitar riffs, not songs. ITs all about the singer of VH to turn them into songs. Chickenfoot smokes the BOBW stuff

It's About Time grew a little on me the more i heard it, but when it was first released I recall thinking it sounded disjointed...like parts of the music just didn't fit with other parts...Up For Breakfast was cheese lyrics but the tune chugs along hard...Learning To See has a great beginning but falls apart a bit for me...in the league of 'new' VH tunes that have been released in the past ten years, Me Wise Magic is the frontrunner imo...but in reference to the 'Foot... /|\ = top of the heap.

That could bias me a little against those songs, but I'll stick by CF and the sound and feel they got on that album.

I love Ed and VH in all its various iterations, but can anyone honestly say that an album filled with tunes like the 3 on BOBW would make them excited? Can you imagine if UFB or IAT had been on F.U.C.K. or Balance - they would have been considered the worst tunes on those albums, but because we've all been sitting around waiting for something, anything, to come out of 5150 we convince ourselves that these songs are better than they actually are. I think when you compare Eddie's songs from pre-'95 to those written after, you hear how bloated, heavy handed and indulgent his writing has become.

IMO, Learning To See would actually do fine on Balance.

I fight with myself over the 3 tunes off of BOBW, I want to like them and I try to like them but in reality the only really good track is LTS, I like almost everything about that song. I don't really think the intro adds anything to it but I love the crunchy guitar and the dynamics of the tune. Sammy's lyrics are good on this one IMO, I think he just lost interest after this one due to the tensions in the studio. I know alot of people don't agree but I don't think Sammy does his best work when he's in a pissy mood. I think when they first went in everything was fine and the first song they did turned out really good but the relationship with Ed just went to shit after that and that's why the songs seem to regress from there. Like I said earlier IAT only sounds like VH in a couple of spots otherwise it's just a patchwork of Ed's guitar over sammy's lyrics, it's just not set up all that well. UFB starts out awsome IMO, I love the first few lines, in fact Ilike this song more than UFB, is it silly? sure but it has a cool vibe goin on. The outro is cool too (I believe it's the same outro that was used on Act Like it Hurts from the WACF demos).
I don't think UFB or IAT are as good as the majority of stuff off of chickenfoot though.

IMO, I don't agree that LTS would do fine after The Seventh Seal...

IAT has two strikes against it.
1.The production is all Eddie (no matter who that Ballard guy was)
2. It is preceded by Eruption.
I'd also have to say it sounds very hollow and detached. Where VH III had ghosts...BOBW-3 had only corpses.
Chickenfoot is none of those.
I still listen to all of it anyway... like trying to heal a head wound with hand sanitizer.
