Just out of curiosity, where did you get your copy? The mag isn't supposed to be released for another 10 days...

That pretty much sucks rocks. I'm pretty disappointed if it was more than just bad mood/off the cuff remarks from Ed. Seems like he's going to the Gene Simmons school of (insert funny comment here) Incidentally, I read an interview from Gene a year or so ago that said pretty much the exact same thing that Ed said. Kiss probably wouldn't record again and why should they blah blah blah, people will just steal it, blah blah blah. And guess what we have now, a new Kiss cd.
Gene is a prick but one more thing Ed could learn from him is to at least be a funny and entertaining prick.
Grains of salt guys. We'll hear new VH music again, and no one knows when. Same as last week. And stop pickin on James.

Wow. I am floored by this turn of events. I thought musicians made music for the love of making music. Guess I was wrong.

Well if Ed truly feels this way then I have to state my true feelings...Since I already saw the upcoming 2010 tour in 2007 and 2008 I don't think I need to spend anymore money to see it again.

As a long term VH fan and more than that, an EVH fan, I am really saddened that this is his opinion and disappointed in the lack of faith both in his own music, and in what our response might be.

I cant jump on the hate wagon. I have nothing to hate him for but I wish he would have the honesty to say he just doesnt want to be in a band anymore and just wants to sell gear. That's ok if that's what he wants to do. Just dont pretend there is a Van Halen when there obviously isnt anymore.

I do think Chickenfoot and their success has been a part of what he is saying now to a massive degree. It would be like a competition from the start and music shouldnt be that way. It should be an expression of you and your bandmates and if others like it that's great, if they dont, there is always something else to listen to.

Remember Ed, there is no such thing as bad music, just whether you like it or not. If you like it personally, release it and maybe some of us just might like it too.

it's the fact that he uses every excuse imaginable to avoid being responsible
to himself as an artist, all the while lying to himself and everyone around
him. That there's apparently such a lack of imagination on how to deal with
the market, or lack thereof, from someone who was one of the world's most
imaginative players, is what I called profoundly disappointing. He has more

And the Chickenfoot comparisons are entirely fair, even if I don't give a shit
about that band. Here's some guys who make new music simply for the

, release it on their own terms and go gold without even trying.
And I don't buy this "he can't win" bullshit. If you can't take the criticism,
you are dead as an artist. There are plenty of Prince and Bowie
records - Vai, Satriani, U2, whatever - that I don't like, but I still have
nothing but love for them as artists, and nothing but respect when they try
to do anything new at all. That's what being an artist is; being brave enough
to take chances and sometimes fall on your ass. And again, coming from
one of the greatest pioneers, it's a sad day when he says it's just not worth it.

It's time for an EVH uprising people. I say we let him know how much we do want new music via his Twitter and My Space pages. Who's with me?

I have to wonder how out of context Ed's statements are.

Yeah, I'll make my more thorough assessment when I read the full article. But this doesn't look good. And it sounds very consistent with what we've heard from this guy for quite a while now (Ed and Al on the couch after awards, Ed in Guitar mags since the 90's, Ed on the radio, Ed in blurbs accosted on the street).

He may be tan and smiling, but he sounds like that shriveled, bitter man he became. As someone else said, the making new music/not making new music shit is so secondary for me. I'm just sick of listening to this guy blame absolutely everyone on the planet but himself. Let's do the math and see what evidence there is for the claims of EVH:

Sammy is the problem: Sammy has released 7 studio albums and one live album since VH. Multiple DVD releases. He tours constantly. And much more.

The fans are the problem and they don't like what I do: Yeah, most of us hated VHIII. So you're never going to try again? You let this derail your whole music career? That's weak. And don't blame us for not liking it. Oh well. Sorry. We didn't like your little project. Deal with it.

DLR is the problem: Dave seems to be in as good a place as any. He seems pretty consistent and solid to me. I don't see any evidence of this. Oh wow, you think DLR had an ego trip in the brief reunion in 96. It's EVH that couldn't handle his ego not DLR. It was quite obvious at that time that Ed wanted full control without any capacity to handle anything about the music or the business of music.

The industry is the problem: The industry is a problem. It always has been. There has always been a historic struggle between artist and industry. This is not a new concept. Musicians adapt to the industry and find a way to make it happen. You just don't throw up your hands and whine about it. Even a batshit nutcase like Axl managed to get an album out. CF seems to be pretty happy about things. So you aren't going to sell 10 million albums. So what?

Michael Anthony is the problem: So laughable.

Fans expectations are the problem: THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM! If there are VH fans that don't like you changing your musical direction you should then lift up your middle finger and tell them to have a little spin courtesy of you. I will support you in that whether I personally like the direction or not. The problem is you are giving us the middle finger now BEFORE you've even done anything in 11 years. My complaint with VHIII has nothing to do with you trying to change directions. My complaint is that it is a piece of shit. It's so completely shitty of EVH to keep hitting fans with his bitterness. WE ARE NOT THE PROBLEM! Save your indignation for people who have actually slighted you.

Geez, there are so many other excuses and people he has blamed over the years, I think I'll just stop here. Again, this is not about new music. This is about EVH's attitude toward everything. He's a petulant prick. He may be physically healthy, but this appears to be the exact same whack job that we've unfortunately grown accustomed to over the last decade.

Did I say I'd reserve judgment until I read the article? Whoops. Oh well, fuck that, he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt at this point. If it turns out that anything in my prior assessment is flawed in the light of the article I will print a personal retraction with an apology to Ed. Any wagers that I won't need to do that?

I think that a lot of people are rushing to judgement on one guy's summarization of an interview that nobody else has read yet. That being said, if this is true, than I'm just amazed at how after releasing 10 albums everybody liked, the negative reaction to one album could have destroyed his confidence.

I think that the reaction to all this is pretty over the top as well. Support VH or don't, no big deal, but the venom spewed toward Ed is amazing. For instance, by my count Aerosmith has done seven tours since their last original album and four tours since their covers album. I bet nobody here is ripping them the same way Ed is getting ripped. If The Police or Genesis decided to do a summer tour next year (without new music), would they get torn to shreds the same way Ed does?

I understand that everyone is dissapointed, and personally I don't think I would fork over $100 to see "Greatest Hits Live" again, but that doesn't make Ed the antichrist.

Dude, this is called the "VH" Links. It's not the Aerosmith forums. Most of us do like them, but would we get our collective panties in a bunch over a Joe vs. Steven debate? Not so much. We're upset coz we care. Maybe too much, but that's for another thread.

Even the most pessimistic posters were holding on to a glimmer of hope that EVH would rise to the top again. We get a report he's digging even deeper. If all that was reported is true, it's quite upsetting.

Unemployment has topped 10% in this country, many ppl are hurting, all the while this guy who's net worth is in the 9 digits doesn't want to part with a few hundred thousand $ to make an album. Mind bottling, as Will Ferrell would say!
