The difference there is Tiki actually announced that he's quitting. Too often, Ed's words say one thing but his actions say another.
If Tiki was saying "Yeah, I've got a lot of football in me to be played. I'm coming back next year. I'm workin' out. It'll be great", but then wouldn't sign with a team... that would be comparable to EVH.
If EVH wants to retire Van Halen as a band, that's unfortunate, but understandable. Just come out and say that's what you're doing.

i got back from the store, at some chik-fil-a and read the interview. I have to say it's one of the best interviews I've read in the rag in a long time. I love the bitchfest...i bet they felt better after getting that out and I can see why so many people are up in arms.

Ageing rocker, Ted Nugent was held briefly for treatment at an Arizona hospital after an altercation with a six year old Chinese girl, sources say.
It appears that the famously right-wing musician, seen above sporting a wig-mullet and full body beard, had made derogotary comments about the girl's father, a communist party official from Ghangzhou.
Just moments after this photo was taken, the plucky girl, whose name remains unreleased, socked the Nuge with a straight left followed by a roundhouse kick, as she screamed "You don't lock. You don't loll. You illelevant".
Sources say that the Nuge will still be performing his scheduled concert on his poorly attended "American dickhead" tour, tomorrow night. Controversy has followed the tour, which includes live on stage killings of illegal aliens. One unwilling attendee, named Jason, of Cuban - Jewish ancestry, said quite succinctly; "Ted's a fag". - The one and only Graeme

Against better judgement, I bought the GW. Interview aside, this magazine continues to dig to new levels of suckiness.
As for the interview, the only real shock is when you reference interviews from the 80's and 90's. But, as was said earlier, anyone who's been paying attention to VH since their fall from mainstream relevance will only be surprised in relation to their level of denial.
As for the bitterness being vented towards EVH, to each their own but I'm kinda beyond any emotional attachment and expectations. I have better things to do than be disappointed by the actions/inactions of someone who is no more tangible to me than the posters I had on my bedroom wall as a teenager and the music I occassionally listen to.

i too made the mistake of buying this. an interview with two of the worlds biggest whiners. the cover would have been better if tommy was holding a violin and eddie some cheeze and wine.
here is the scanned interview in tiff files: http://www.4shared.com/file/15715950...erviewtar.html

EVH: It’s similar to when [Sammy] Hagar joined the band. It’s just the element that a different person brings to the band. It’s just like my son being the band’s bassist now. He approaches everything differently, and the rhythm section is now like this huge wall behind me. I’d want to play with him regardless of whether he was my son or not. It’s not to knock anyone. It’s just when you change elements of a band, the chemistry also changes. One little change can shift the whole dynamic. It’s not that it’s getting any better or worse. A lot of people ask me which Van Halen singer was better. You can’t compare them. It’s like asking which guitarist is better. Nobody is better than anybody. Every player is their own person.
I actually like what he says there at the end of this, but I’m surprised he offered that up considering he’s been working with Dave. I don’t think Dave is a real member of VH right now or else I don’t think Ed offers this insight about comparing the lead singers.
The part about Wolfie makes me laugh! He really does have a parental blind spot for that kid! Which is fine, people do that I suppose. But this is VH for Crimin’ It’ly! If this sound is so big and you are comparing Wolfie’s entrance into VH as the type of thing that can take the band in a different musical direction ala when Hagar joined, don’t you have to then produce something? What good is adding this supposed powerful dynamic to the band, for what? To play “You Really Got Me” and “Runnin’ With the Devil”? Who Cares? It’s just weird.

The first thing any professional musician would think after listening to a comment like yours (amongst many profanities) is this guy hasn't a clue what a decent singer or musician is...feeding strawberries to swine comes to mind.

Get your head out of Ed's ass please.
Gary Cherone with VH was lame. Gary Cherone with Extreme is a notch above lame.
Besides, this isn't about Gary Cherone. It's about Ed being a total pussy and wanting to tour as a nostalgic act instead of making new music with Roth that his fans want to hear.

EVH: You just do what you do. If anyone has a better way, show me how to please everyone all the time! For some reason people love to complain about everything. The internet has made it easy for people to do that. Shut the fuck up and get a life, or show me how good you can do it.
People think they know what I should do. A lot of fans are complaining that VH should put out a new record now. Everybody is going, “Eddie should do this. Eddie should do that.” I’ve got all kinds of music that I could put out if I wanted to, but they don’t take into consideration the other members of the band. Maybe the singer doesn’t want to do that. I play classical piano. I play a little bit of cello. I write all kinds of different music that certain singers or certain musicians don’t want anything to do with. So what do I do? When people see VH or Black Sabbath, it conjures up a certain image in their minds. If there’s just one albino pubic hair outside of that image, they won’t accept it. And if we do put something out, the first thing people are going to say is that it isn’t as good as the classics. Okay. Put it in your closet for 20 years and then it will be classic.
People forget that we put three new songs – “It’s About Time,””Learning to See” and “Up for Breakfast” – on Best of Both Worlds in 2004. The reviews didn’t even mention those songs. When we played the new songs live, people would just stand there. Nobody said anything about them. Why go to all the trouble, spend all of that time in the studio and spend tons of your own money – there aren’t even any record labels anymore to put our shit out – to record a new album when people are only going to complain about it or ignore it or somebody is going to download it from the internet for? We might not record something new. There’s an element of satisfaction and joy to creating something new, but not when it comes solely at your own expense and when people are just going to shoot it down, mo matter what you do.
Wow! What a horrid, pathetic speech he makes here. This whole thing just speaks for itself.
1. Again, if it’s all subjective then you wouldn’t be so bothered by the opinions of critics or fans or that evil “internet”.
2. Quit blaming singers for you not putting out music! Either get a singer who is on board or release solo stuff. Vai does it, Satriani does it, all jazz musicians do it, the classical guys who you keep saying you are so akin to do it. It’s not unprecedented! You can release anything you want. What a whiny bitch.
3. As someone mentioned before, many people rejected 2004 b/c EVH was a drunk piece of shit. For EVH to say that those three songs tagged along to a bullshit greatest hits package and pathethic, half-assed, bullshit tour, is somehow indicative of how fans criticize poor Eddie’s musical vision is just fucking delusional.
4. I just want to point out that in this one answer he blames fans, critics, the record companies, the internet, and lead singers. C’mon Ed, what about the lawyers?
5. I love also how he is totally having it both ways: If we put something out people ignore it and don’t say anything about it. But if you have anything bad to say STFU!!! Ed, perhaps they are shutting the fuck up. Basically what Ed is saying here is unless you are going to praise my music STFU. But wait, they did STFU about the 3 songs released in 2004 and you are complaining about that!! Messed up.

Quick thoughts about this pathetic interview. Ed says he's a musical artist, but he doesn't have the balls to back up what that entails. Iommi and Eddie further in the article complain incessantly about fans expectations. It got me thinking about actual musical artists that probably have the same feeling about music that Eddie does, but then they are consistent enough to back up how they feel about it. Just off the top of my head here are some artists who do it how they want:
Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Pearl Jam.
All these guys are huge artists that just do it their own way in the studio and in concert. Casual fans of these guys have dropped off over the years, but they remain huge, viable artists because they do what they want. You don't know what you'll get album to album from these guys or even show to show, but if you follow any one of these artists you know that they back up what they say. They have the courage of their convictions. Eddie has the conviction but not the courage.

I'd like to see a list of musicians/ artist that have told their fans to "stfu" and "get a life". As a fan that has supported this man and his band since 1978, this is the most troubling comment for me.
Hey...maybe he's not talking to me. hmm....
