Some bands have had the sense when an album is not progressing the way they want to just ditch it and start over.

That is what they should have done.

My main problems with it:

1. Bad producer. Some will say the producer is over rated, totally disagree. Go listen to the Jimmy Page produced Please Read the Letter versus the T-Bone Burnett produced version that won a grammy. One is a great tune and one is almost unlistenable.

2. Lyrics first then music, the exact opposite of what Van Halen had always done. Didn't work, they should have realized it somewhere along the line and started over.

3. Gary's vocals. They should have waited until he had fully recovered from throat surgery. He sounds horrible.

4. Ed playing bass. Some apologists would disagree, but Mike is light years ahead of Ed in playing a good bass line for a tune.

5. The Grand Finale? It sucked, but I will give them an A for effort, it just didn't turn out very good.

"I'm impersonating Eddie right now. I'm not making music either" - Theresonlyoneway

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

what part of his post don't you agree with? they did write lyrics first on some occasions for III and it was horrible. Gary sounded like crap, ed over plays the bass, the production sucks....it's pretty clear cut.

Ed's a shitty bass player, I think any guitarist can tell you that. Mike's WAY ahead of him as a bassist, I think DD's post is right on the money.

The lyrics on the album are atrocious. I got VHIII when I was TEN YEARS OLD and said "What the fuck is this!?" "Hound dog chasing a bird?" That lyric is horrifying, as are most of the rest. Gary's voice was awful. I love Extreme, one of my favorite bands, and Gary's one of my favorite vocalists, but Ed tried to push vocals out of Gary that Gary just couldn't accomplish. Ed's drumming is pretty poor (I'm sure he drummed on a few), and the backing vocals on the record are horrible. I don't think Mike contributed a thing in that department, though I didn't think he had much of a choice. I don't think it's Ed's singing that makes it so bad. I think it's Ed's overly-processed singing. Production sounds like the album was recorded underwater.

Say what you want. As awkward as Mike and even Al were up on stage a lot of times during the III Tour, the songs still translated WAY better. And that just proves the importance of Ed, Al, and Mike to the sound of Van Halen, because Al and Mike weren't on a lot of songs on the record and they sounded like shit. But live, they gelled a lot better. They sounded better with Mike's vocals and bass in there and signature AVH drum fills. ALL three need to be there, I still think.

The ONLY, and I mean ONLY bonus on the album is Ed's guitar playing. He came up with some fine riffs and solos. "Dirty Water Dog," "Year To The Day," and "Without You" are incredible guitar songs I think. But...they're not VAN HALEN songs, and that's where the key problem lies. He wrote songs that aren't "Van Halen" brand songs. Instead he wrote songs for a solo album, sadly it's not the name "Eddie Van Halen" on the cover.

The album is a piece of shit.

Get over yourself.

I'm making a point based off your post AND DD's post. I'm not talking to you. I'm simply making a point. Much like I was the last time

Sorry, but got to go with the general consensus on this one....VH deviated way to far from being VH on III. One does not order a 1/4 pounder w/ cheese and come away happy finding they got a Hula Burger instead.

What tracks am I covering? I quoted your post for a reason. Am I trying to convince you or any VH3 fans of anything? Absolutely not. I have a very strong-minded opinion on the album that generally seems to be the consensus around here. If you're reading this much into a QUOTE, this isn't my problem.

You said how much you love it. Good for you. I quoted your post to explain why I agree with DD. Did you even read it? Did I say anything malicious towards you? No.

I don't see the big deal at all. And I don't get why you have to be so condescending. I'm doing what I've always done here. You disagree with me. I get it. Stop taking it as some kind of personal slam.
