Do you think VH3 would have been better if...
Cherone sang like he did on Pornograffitti? I mean, when I listen to that disc, it still kinda blows me away. I think Extreme were emulating VH a lot back then. The main point is that Cherone had his own identity, whereas on VH3 he sounded like he was trying to copy Hagar to a T. He doesn't normally have that huskier voice like Hagar has, the way he sang on VH3.
Anyway, do you think the whole product could have been better if Cherone sounded more like himself?

Would have made little difference. The songs were just bad songs.

Ugghhh...this tired topic, yet again? The answer is simple by now: If VH III had material half as good as Pornograffitti, the discussion would not be taking place. Instead, a poorly recorded demo found it's way to release as a Van Halen record.
Van Halen III stinks donkey-balls for all but the most dedicated fan. Can we just get over it at this point?

There are so damn many "what if?" threads now on this board, it makes me, well, bored.
What if? What if? What if? Van Halen rose and fell. It's not an uncommon story. Why must we continue to speculate about what could have been? Seriously! Don't people have other things more important to occupy their brain energy with?!

I think people come here to get their Van Halen fix. When the band is aimless it gives rise to threads like "What if Balloon Boy were to replace Wolfgang on bass?" getting over 500 views in 24 hours. Fans are desperate for Van Halen news... any news... even if it is fantasy. Who wants to admit that their rock gods may have played their last tour? So..... what if they toured again? .... what if this.... what if that... It's apparently better than believing the rollercoaster ride is over and the train has pulled into the station for the last time.

Yes and no. While the "Wolfgang/Balloon Boy" thread you started may have received some 500+ hits, it also received some 23 responses about the utter stupidity of creating it in the first place. The thing is, you can not create sheer nonsense to prove a point later on, unless you are planning a career on a cable news outlet.
There are enough reasons that have basis in fact regarding the future of Van Halen. There is enough bullshit to wade through without the creation of more.

Cherone didn't sound like himself because of the way he was recorded and the way it was mixed afterwards. The whole record lacked polish and basically sounded like rubbish. Just listen to the drums.......just bloody awful, I can make better sounds banging on a cardboard box. Cherone had the same treatment on his vacals, very dry with no crispness to it. The whole thing just sounded too raw and dead. Had 3 been better recorded/produced/mixed/mastered it would have been fine.
However the recording quality of that disk is so far away from modern standards I find it hard to understand how it actually made it into the stores.

The production was just one of the many problems with that shitpile of an album. The biggest problem though was the songs sucked, you can't polish a turd.

To me III more than anything sounded like a joint Queen/VH tribute album! The only song that had real potential on it was FITH, but it was ruined by the lyrics and over theatrical delivery Cherone sang with. III was just an overindulgent album where it wasn't yet deserved from this "new" band. Don't get me wrong, I've always said Ed's playing was great on the album, but it couldn't save the songs. Eddie was in a strange place, and if there's one thing he did succeed at conveying to the listener, it was HIS mindset and selfishness at the time. Proof that great VH is the sum of all it's parts. Not just one.

That was a good Mythbusters episode...turns out you can polish certain types of turds. But I am pretty shure VH3 wasn't one of those turds. (I must say that Dirty Water Dog is still enjoyed by me)

What Van Halen 3 needed was Sammy Hagar to rein it all in and create the melodies that EVH couldnt find.
Those songs are a mess and are all over the place.
From what i gathered it was DLR and Sammy who always was the one with the pop sense and abilitly to form a song.

My brother once said VH 3 sounded like Extreme demos, lol.
Cherone's vocal cords were in bad shape at the time if I remember write, but if he could sing at the top of his game both he and Eddie were writing garbage.
