they were promo photos you know.

also the "mess" in the studio was for the party image they were pushing back then.

it just looks cool,

but then again they are VH so i wouldn't be surprised if eddie was blowing out cab after cab since he had to turn up to "11" to get his tone.

Party image? Are you serous.. I think it was more like a lifestyle. They lived that shit. They were all drunks, coke heads and junk food junkies...

That "MESS" was their reality and life I'm afraid

Thank GOD they were young when they did all that stuff and their lifestyle doesn't show too much on their appearances now.....THAT kind of extremely UNHEALTHY lifestyle will usually make you age before your time.

THANK GOD I've always thought drug use is just stupid.

I think that is not the studio, I think that is Dave's parents basement, they would jam there first to hammer out ideas for a couple of weeks before hitting the studio in the early days. I believe they used to also rehearse for their early tours there as well.

Again, I think, not sure, but I believe that is correct.

Just to put your comment in perspective -- the Eddie Van Halen in the picture you quoted was in the midst of writing, creating, rehearsing and laying down one of the most influential albums in the history. Whatever combination of things he did at that time, provided the ingredients to that amazing piece of work.

Hard to tell in the pic how and why he was using those cabs, but the results speak for themselves.

I think youre right. I know he used a lot of empty heads and cabs too. THat was the look back then. They really didn't have Dragons and zombies and shit like that back in the day. The best you could hope for was a shitload of amps behind you.

Van Halen used to play a bunch of backyard parties and if they were getting a cut they probably did pretty well. I know a few people that went to those around the Long Beach area and from what I have heard there were a few hundred people showing up to some of those.

Actually, that was taken while they were recording VH2. There’s a whole mess of photos of them that day in that studio (Dave’s got his foot bandaged.)
Why does Ed have so many cabs? Is it for show? Is for different tones? Does it have something to do with a “cascading” technique? Who knows, but they guys at Metroamp forums have tons of theories on it.

To address several points/questions:
1. Ed and the boys probably took all their money and put it into equipment. I used to be in a band that was going for the gold, a.k.a. trying to make it and that's exactly what we'd do.
2. Stuff was cheaper back then, at least in my mind. Ed probably got all his crap used. As a matter of fact, we know that most of it was used, according to Ed.
3. The cabs on that VHII picture probably all had different types of speakers. That's my guess, anyway.
4. Ed and Al drank cheap shit. I bet they also sampled a little of the old man's libations, too.

Here's a little tid bit that I heard back in 92 or 93. The blue dodge van that they rolled up to the Whiskey in for their 15 year anniversary was in fact their gig van from back in the day. I think Mike or Alex kept it I was told. There is an old ABC/chan 7 LA clip from that day that shows them standing next to it because they tried to sneak past the cops with it without being noticed.

He did for a fact use others. He used a white Bassman, Laney's. His main amp was the Marshall, but he scored some pretty cool gear. I don't know how far back he went with Jose, but for instance, when I used to frequent Petersen, I scored some amazing amps at great deals. I'd often get them before they went up for sale. Sometimes he'd get 'em in with blown tranny's, or they were modded poorly, and needed a refurbish. I would'nt doubt Ed aqquired gear like this. Par for the course for alot of guys.
