View Full Version : The best Van Halen instrumentals!

First one is going to be tough ain't it. My top 5 are as followed

1. Eruption (I wonder why.... http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif )
2. 316 (Live, its like 10 minutes and its the only one I'd listen to for 10 minutes unless Eruption was 10 minutes long.)
3. Spanish Fly (One of my favorites.)
4. 1984 (One hell of an intro for VH's only number 1 hit, so far.)
5. Neworld (I think its a great combination as an intro for Gary's best VH song.)

Baluchitherium

The 5150th Dimension
03.21.00, 10:35 PM
1. Eruption (the greatest minute and forty-some seconds of guitar fretwork ever to be recorded)

2. Spanish Fly (this song proves that Eddie can display speed, accuracy and grace on something other than an electric guitar cranked up to 11. Playing like this on a nylon-string guitar pulverized all the Eddie-clones in a tranquil way)

3. Baluchithereum(spelling?)-another superb instrumental from Ed. The guitar rips, and even holds back a bit(which is not always a bad thing). Good bass. Great tune to listen to when driving.

4. 316

5. 1984-so what if it isn't guitar. It's still pretty cool.

In no particular order, my all-time favs would be:

Eruption (goes without saying)
Respect The Wind
Spanish Fly
Balu ... (however you spell it)
The long break in Humans Being
316, 1984, Neworld ... and the list keeps going and going and ...

Of course, Eruption, Spanish Fly and 316 are more Eddie solos rather than "instrumentals". Wasn't really sure what we were counting here, looking at everyone else's posts, but what difference does it make? They all rule.

Because it was like pulling teeth to get him to write for the Balance album. That is why there are 3 instrumentals on the album. Eddie says the guys work ethic sucks. And he's right. :D

What are you guys talking about? The reason Baluchitherium is an instrumental because Bruce Fairbairn liked it more as an instrumental. There was a Sammy vocal track but they chose not to use it because of what served the song better, not necessarily because no lyrics were written for it.

Plus, whose work ethic sucks? 3 records in 5 years vs. 1. And you can bet Sammy will have his 4th out before Van Halen puts out another album.

Alright... now let's hear the tirade about how Sammy's solo albums suck. I'm waiting. But before you type, just think about how good III was and whether or not you've actually really listened to Sammy's solo work or just rip on him because you didn't like him in Van Halen.

I'm sooooooooooooooo sick of this crap... graemlins/irked.gif

I don't really understand why anyone would start a thread like this. I agree, Have you even heard Eruption?!? If Neworld is your idea of a great instrumental that your missing out myfriend. I suggest you go down to your local HMV or Musicworld or wherever they sell those little round things made out of plastic and buy Van Halen 1 and go to track 2 and put the headphones on and crank the volume up past the listening level of 2 you used for Neworld and lay back and enjoy while Mr. Edward Van Halen re-writes the books on guitar playing.
Just felt like ranting. I don't mean anything by it.
