View Full Version : Sam's new project?

Witht the current state of VH even more up in the air than usual at the moment (and hey aint that saying something!), what do you think Sam's next project should be?
Id like to see him give the wabos a rest, grab MA, Chad Smith,Tommy Lee, Vinnie Paul, Hammett, Cantrell, Billy Duffy, Kroeger and any other rocker who hangs at the Wabo and release an album of classic rock songs. Now before people start bagging me! Cut about 10 to 12 classic songs, some well known, some obscure and cut a loose, raw set that would sound like the stones on steroids.
Or grab MA, satch and denny carmissi and release a balls out rock record?
Then again there are a couple of other dudes that play guitar and drums that would be cool, but I dont think they care.
What do the red heads think? Dont get me wrong the wabos are cool ,I just Sam needs to get turn da music up a bit with his buds from the bar.

At the Chicago show, Sam and Eric Johnson seemed to have a good thing going. Eric Johnson was smoking on Finish What You Started.

I wouldn't mind seeing Sammy give the Wabos a rest for just one summer...cuz if they toured again, I'd miss it, and I haven't missed a Sam show in a few years.

I'd like he and Mike to get with another drummer and guitar player, similar to what they were about to do with Planet Us, and make a real rockin' album. Eddie and Alex are my first choice. After them, maybe Eric Johnson wouldn't be so bad?

A revival of the Planet Us project would be cool...i really like the 'classic rock covers' disk idea (good work Cammo)...i'll prob get some heat for this one, but i'd actually like to see an unplugged disk of some Sam classics and even a few Montrose tunes. His semi-unplugged mini tour he did to promote Marching to Mars back in the spring of '97 was amazing...

THE Eric Johnson??? How is it possible I didn't hear about this??? Did he sit in for just one song?

On either Mikey's site or Sammy's site, there are pictures of this.

No foolin'. It went down (with EJ).

Tell you what, getting with a ax slayer like Johnson would probably make Eddie a little aggitated. Not that it really matters any more.

Just from the way things look, Sam & Mike are done with VH. Nothing more in it for them (outside of cash). Now the whole reunion thing is a been there and done that deal (and it wasn't really look upon that fondly afterward).

Wow! It is true. How the fuck did I miss that? One of the coolest things about Sam is that he'll jam with just about anyone who'd around, no disrespect to EJ.

Dude, it fookin' rocked. Eric Johnson was just all over FInish What Ya Started. They played like a 20 minute version, and then I believe he stayed on the stage for Fight For your Right To Party...Chicago was one of the few places last year they had an opening band....and it was Eric Johnson...so I had a feeling he was gonna jump on stage with Sam.

When they were done, Sam says, that's one of three best guitar players around...the crowd mocked booed a little bit, and Sam said, what I said one of three?

It was rockin' though.

It was fucking LOUD too. Three guitarists and I just felt my seat rumbling harder than it did all night. I wasn't sitting, but you could feel it against you. It was a very fun performance. :thumb:

I totally agree. And Sam will jam with anyone. He's loved by all, except Eddie.

Yeah Cabo Bret good call, an acoustic slant on a few tunes would be real cool, maybe a swamp, bluesy version of serious ju ju or something in that vein. Without it being a comparison to Santana, I think if Sam wrote some stuff with other guys like the ones mentioned, there would be some real cool stuff. Planet US had real potential, respecially with Satch in the mix. Come to think of it, Sam SHOULD call either satch or eric johnson, just for the piss off factor alone! I really think Sam could do justice to a few classics from the stones, the who, free, creedence, mountain, the beatles etc. and given the possible talent he could muster and his love for crankin out loose, grooving covers, , I think it could really do something. F##k, id but it!

Vocals: Sam
Bass: MA
Guitar: Cantrell
Rythm: Billy Duffy
Drums: Chad Smith

A song: Baba O'reilly (the who)

The possibilities are endless, who else has got some smokin line ups and songs, maybe the idea will gather some momentum?

Seems like everybody is doing that these days.

New originals by The Other Half so they can mix them into the live set next summer. :yell: :headbang: :yell:

IMHO, I'd like to see Sammy take some time off from touring and spend it with family and friends. Kick back, relax and let whatever happens next come to him at a natural pace. He's been so good to us for so many summers and Ten 13's that the man deserves some downtime.

If he wants downtime, I'm sure he'll take downtime. He goes on tour and makes an album not only for the fans, but because he wants to and he enjoys doing it.

How many times have we been able to see Sammy on tour since he first left VH? And how many albums/DVDs has he put out? And how old is he now? The dude's been busy for ten years, and he is arguably better now than he has ever been.

Meanwhile, ask all those same quesitons about VH.

Agree! I was really surprised, starting with Marching To Mars at what a great, warm voice Sammy has. Balance showed some hints of it, but his full range is stunning after he left the VH fold.

I agree that he should try and do something different. I know he loves the Wabos and they put on a fun show but it would be nice for him to go back to some rock and get away from the beach bum thing. I know it is about the Cabo now for him but he should be able to work out an agreement to promote the tequila during the tour even if it is Planet Us US tour sponsored by Cabo Wabo Tequilla. The booze is his bread and butter now so I don't see him leaving that far behind whatever it is he decides to do. I think I spent $100 on the stuff in Myrtle Beach last year and only $50 for the tix.

Really? Other than the suspended chord Angus/Keith type stuff, what has he done that's so special? Seriously, this is coming from somone who likes the Cult, but as a guitarist I'd have to take Cantrell.

I think this is one of the more ironic things that's happened since "the split".
EVH and AVH claimed at the time that he was canned or left that his work ethic sucked and that's why he wasn't in the band.
It's just nice to see VH got rid of that dead anchor so they could get some work done :smokin:

Maybe that's just it... For me, as a guitarist, I'd take Keith over just about anyone.

And that includes our site's namesake.

I just don't really enjoy most lead guitar to be honest. I think chords, and rhythm/poly-rhythms are just way more exciting.

I'll take the intro and verse on House of Pain over Eruption any day.

And I'll take Wild Flower (on a good night) over either of those, the way they would be played these days.

That being said, I love the idea of Sam doing a classic rock record. The VH show boot from Cabo in 92 shows how cool it would be.

With out getting into 'who is better' etc, i think if Sam did something like this, he would be able to assemble the band to whoever would fit the song, some duffy would rip it up, cantrell on others etc. i think it is cool that people have their take on this, and watching the footage from the bday bash, in addition to all the boots and live shows, sam would be able to really put together a killer set, also given that MA MUST be fired up after how the CEOs of VH inc. have treated him.
It would be like the stuff Glen Hughes has done with Smith and John from the Chilli Peppers, awesome stuff. Hey talking about voices, how about that guy!
Someone get this idea to Sam!

Does anyone remember the movie American Beauty? Kevin Spacy went all mid-life crisis and wanted to bone a teenaged cheerleader, and his daughter wanted to get with the neighbor boy whose father was the super-militant homophobic nazi dad. Turns out the dad was so anti-gay because he WAS gay and did everything he could to fight it.

Anyone see a similarity to Mr. Sammy-basher?

Again, how soon can we expect to see him banned?
