View Full Version : Thats Why I Love You VAN HALEN 3

I have to admit that I have been a strong critic of the album Van Halen 3 . It's not directed at Gary but at the way the songs are and the way they sound .

Yesterday I wanted to hear Thats Why I Love You and Glenn gave me some info on where to download it from . Well I did and it's the whole song and it sounds great . Classic Van Halen sound . Why in the hell did they pull this one off , it blows away every song on Van Halen 3 .

My favorite part in particular is the little guitar solo that Ed does at the 3 minute mark . Talk about great . If the rest of the album had the same sound as this I believe Van Halen 3 could have been a smash even with Gary at lead vocals . On Thats Why I Love You Gary does a good job . He doesn't force it so to speak . He sounds cool and laid back .

Like I said earlier I don't bash VH 3 because of Gary or that poeple have said he's gay or whatever , that doesn't matter .
What matters is the music and the songs .
After hearing this song I thought , man this shit isn't bad . My only dissapointment is the rest of the songs . Sorry to bore you guys , just had to get that off my chest .

There is one line on there and Gary sounds like Dave on the two songs on Best Of... he says something like "Another one of those...blah blah blahs" It souns like Dave deep...anyone know what I mean?

Yeah that song is the best song Ed, Al and Mike recorded with Gary. Amazing song!!! They made a huge mistake when they decided not to put that song on 3.

I'll admit, I wasn't blown away when I first heard that song, but the longer I listen to it the more I like it. It's got a really great vibe to it and it totally grows on you.

I also think it is better than many of the songs on the album. I really like the intro and its one of those songs that has the ability to grow on you. I can think of at least 3 songs that I would personally take off to put that one on.

I think this may get better exposure and be better served in the songs and albums section. gonna move er on over nowhttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

i think 3 is a good album... i didn't like it first... it was not love at first listening...

i think gary is a very good singer, it's a pitty it didn't work out, i guess he had lots of things to give to the band.

i think we all gonna look to 3 in a different way in a couple of years... i think it will be something that every vh fan will love in 2005.

we'll learn to love it.

thank you gary

and please, come back soon dave!!!

Ed6150! I can't believe you hadn't heard it yet!

Listen, anyone out there who hasn't downloaded it, GO GET IT and give it a chance. Gary doesn't sound bad, and best of all, you can ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND what he's saying, and he's not doing all this weird lyrical scriptural stuff that I can't understand, it's just regular words that rhyme, ya know? I think it's a GREAT song.

Eddie sounds AWESOME. I wouldn't say it's quite like "Classic VH" but it is really CREATIVE and it sounds raw and stuff. The solo kicks my ass. I get goosebumps!

I think you're right, Ed6150...if the rest of the album had sounded like this, it could've been a smash.

Every time I listen to it, I have to listen to it twice, you know? It's that kind of song.

Can you believe the reason they kept it off the album is because Gary wasn't happy with his vocal performance?!!??! I also noticed what GirlGoneBad noticed...he DOES sound kinda like Dave. Just a little bit.

And the one part...
"ooooohhh...oooooohhhh"
and then
"saaaaave meee froooom myyyysellllllf"
You can actually hear Mike on background vocals, which was seriously lacking on most of III.

Awesome tune, I love it love it LOVE IT, in case anybody out there is unclear on how much I think this song rocks...man, what a fuckin' WASTE...it could have saved III imho.

I downloaded it, but unfortunately I still can't get past Gary's voice. He just gets on my nerve too much.

It's a great tune and would have been a great addition to VH3. It would have been a perfect song to follow up "Without You" as a second single. Apparently the boys were revamping the song and were suppose to include it on the new album they were working on with Gary. I wish we could hear those tracks.

Where can you find it? I'm having difficulty in finding it, and any help would be great.

Thanks,

I have this song on my Winamp playlist. I love it. Yeah, he does sound a bit like Dave. After listening to it, I thought it was awesome. Redwht&blk and myself thought that Dave could actually do the song also. It isn't that hard. It definitely gives me chills. I said that earlier in another thread here. Does anyone know the lyrics. I can put almost all of them together but I'm not for sure on all of them. Ed's solo is PIMP. Is he playing his guitar with a violin bow there, you know where I'm talkin about? I always thought it sounded like he was. I think it's like at about the 3:00 minute mark or so.

TWILY is the shit. It's the best song they made with Gary and they didn't even throw it on the album. I feel bad for the guy. Ed's solo gave me shills. I really wish they'd have added it.

"PIMP" ha! http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif

Well, I finally downloaded it myself (thanks for the link, Glenn!), and MAN what a great great tune! Why they chose to leave this off the album is absolutely mind-boggling to me. IMHO, it is far better than anything on VH3, and while I definitely didn't love the album, I didn't despise it like some either. I really like Without You, Fire In The Hole, One I Want, and even Year To The Day, but TWILY just has a killer vibe to it. I must have listened to it 3 times in a row, and while I definitely want the reunion to happen, if that song was indicative of the direction they were headed with Gary, that next album would have been all kinds of PIMP! http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif.

Does anyone know if Van Halen ever played this one live ??

Glenn

I'm almost 100% sure they never played TWILY live. Apparently (sp?) it was going to be on the follow up to VH III.

Then Gary up and leaves, dammit. I was actually looking forward to the next VH release. Part of me wishes he could put out a second album, because anything is better than what is happening now (nothing). Part of me is glad he left making the way clear for Dave to return and follow up 1984, CGTSNM and MWM. That's just me though.

I believe if they had been able to release the follow up to 3, it would have been better.

Does anyone, Glenn, know what the next album was suppose to be called???????

I heard that Rock N' Roll Cliche might have been a possible title for the second Gary album. I wonder if any of the material is being reworked with DLR?

At 1:55 during TWILY, I think that little break in the solo sounds a lot like part of the solo in "Top of the World". It just needs a squeal, or pinched harmonic or something in there. I am sure it's got to be the same notes, or the same patern of notes just played at a different place on the neck. Anybody else ever notice this.

I love the little gradual pick slides in it and how now there used almost like a percussive instrument to build the song back to a creshendo (sp)!

Jimmy, I noticed that too. I think TWILY...or twily(said out-loud) is a lot like TOTW. It has the same feeling to it.

I agree with you all:TWILY SHOULD have made VH3; maybe they would've taken off Ballot or the Bullet. BUT, even on TWILY, Gary's shrill tone is too much for me to take. From what I read in an interview (sorry, I don't recall which magazine), Edward says they didn't use it because it sounded too much like 'old' Van Halen. Well, at least it would have sounded like SOMETHING!!! I could go on for days praising and bashing VH3 (simultaneously, nonetheless), but that's a different thread, for a different day.
