Wierd. I dont expect any to have an answer for this or even respond to it really but what gives here?

This happened on the 11th
9-11 (9+2=11)
254th day of the year (2+5+4= 11)
111 days left till the end of the year
The buildings together look like 11
Plane # 11
92 passengers on board (9+2=11)
Afghanistan has 11 letters
New York was the 11th state entered into the union

Abe, I'm suprized you didnt beat me to it smilies/wink.gif

Hmmmm...interesting.

Afghanistan only has 11 letters in ENGLISH. Thus, there IS an exception, and therefore the string of 11's is broken.

Actually, I HAD thought about the reasoning behind the chosen date. The 12th was the sentencing date for one of the terrorists already convicted here.

The September 12th was the anniversary of the date of the triple plane hijacking in the 70's.

The way I saw it, they struck a day early.

Also, you could argue it was 9-11-2001, which is 9+1+1+2+0+0+1=14, which breaks the chain as well.

Mathematical coincidences can be found pretty easily almost ANYWHERE if you try hard enough. There's a card game exercise I use with the kids at school called '24', which has 4 numbers on a card, and they try to figure out a way to calculate a '24' any which way they can.

Once I took number theory, I found out how easy you can find ANY number you want out of nearly ANY series if you look hard enough. So, I'm sort of jaded and a bit cynical, and as such, I would actually be the LEAST likely person here to notice all that.

It's still fun to play with numbers though!

If the terrorist plot had one of those Hollywood-type code names, '911' would have made a perfect choice, as it wouldn't stick out if mentioned in public, yet it would have a connotative AND denotative meaning. Had they used a Porsche 911, then I'd be more convinced that there is actually some meaning behind the coincidence.

Nice to know you had me in mind while figuring all those out, though. smilies/smile.gif It reaffirms my 'geek' status one step further. smilies/biggrin.gif

By our time, yes. But It may have been September 12 already in whatever point in the middle east the orders came from. What time zone is Afghanistan in? It would have been approximately 14:00 GMT (2:00 PM) when the attacks began... How many hours ahead of GMT is Afghanistan?

I've taught number theory so I may be equal first on the least likely list.........wait that makes 1 1 smilies/scared.gif smilies/wink.gif

Abe is entirely correct, you can see pretty much any pattern you like with numbers if you look hard enough and know what you want to find, because in some sense every possible pattern is there somewhere . It's all complete nonsense of course - witness the bible codes which were in part perpetuated by a fairly famous and talented Israeli mathematician (with an agenda). What's far less know is that it was roundly dismissed by the mathematical community as being based on completely arbitrary and non-mathematical premises.

Three of the most famous Arab-Israeli agreements (Camp David, Oslo and another one I forget) were all signed right around this time. Or maybe they just wanted to have a high probability of good flying conditions with minimal chance of delays - I can't imagine they would have planned this for January in the North East.

Nope. Afghanistan is 9.5 hours ahead of EST. It would have been the next day in New Zealand though, for example.

I had thought about that as well, but the date for the anniversary, going by one of the American times zones (not sure which), for the triple hijacking in the 70's was the 12th, so if they WERE already a day ahead, then this attack would STILL be a day early.
