Did you just see this???

I was walking into work when a co-worker told me something bad happened at the WTC.

I go in the lunchroon where it's already on TV, with smoke pouring from the top, and all of a sudden a 737 comes into the picture and flies into the other tower!!!!

UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE

holy shit - everything has gone crazy. The pentagon is on fire, the white house is being evacuated, there's another fire in DC.

Part of the Pentagon has been evacuated. Part of the White House has been evacuated. I have not heard that either of those buildings is on fire. A Palestinian group has supposedly taken responsibility for crashing the planes into the WTC towers, according to Reuters news service. We should all say a prayer for the people of New York and everyone who lost loved ones. I also encourage everyone to tune into your local public radio station and listen to National Public Radio for responsible reporting.

There's certainly something on fire in DC - it's on CNN right now. They've closed every airport in the country.

I just talked to my mother in England, BBC is saying 1000 people dead around the WTC smilies/frown.gif

Yeah, I'm ok. A friend of ours works at the observation deck at WTC smilies/frown.gif We think it was before he was supposed to start work but no news from him.

Another friend of mine is trapped in a basement of a Wall Street building. They aren't allowed to leave - he's in a gas mask and pulling glass out of people down there smilies/frown.gif

Jesus! Both towers gone, the Pentagon!

Supposedly there was a plane crash in western Pennsylvania, as well as an explosion in the US Capitol!

All I gotta say for now is this--when we respond in kind to the terrorists, fuck the rest of the world if they don't like our response!! smilies/mad.gif

I'm with lawchick on this, too. I'm sure there's many of us who know someone either who worked in the WTC or the Pentagon--my thoughts are definitely with them and their loved ones!

I’ve decided to take out the pics of the WTC now because we’ve all seen the footage & pictures of this horrific act of terrorism. http://www.mpz.co.uk/cwm/otn/sad/bncry.gif

I originally put the pics up for people like myself who were at work with no TV, plus the news sites were damn near impossible to link up to. The images are now burned into everybody’s minds & I feel the pics don’t need to be up there any longer.

The only way any terrorist group could pull off an attack like this is if (1) They have the backing from another country, and (2) they had support internally within the U.S.A.

People when we do retaliate, and trust me we will, it's not just going to be a dropping of a few bombs. Think more like an invasion. When we do find out which country supported this, war will be declared. Just my own personal intuition on this folks.

Intelligence officials have privately stated that only 2 or 3 terrorist organizations world-wide possess the financial backing and know-how to pull off an assault as well coordinated as this one. Let's hope no other countries sponsored this cowardly act. This is an outright act of war!

I just read some AP reports where "experts" are saying the terrorists had their own people as pilots.

Possible, but the pilots would have to be sleeper agents or something.

I don't know about that, but no pilot is going to fly into a building like that definitely not without a fight. Maybe the pilots were shot shortly (a minute?) before the planes hit, so the terrorists could get close enough, then kill the pilots so they could fly into their target without interference.

This shit smacks of a Clancy novel where the White House & US Capitol were attacked.

I can't believe any airline crew would go along with such a thing, even under the threat of death.

All I can think of is that the terrorists must have had pilots with them. Airliners aren't that tough to fly if you want to hit a building. Wouldn't have to have 1,000s of hours to manage that.

If this wasn't backed by a country, I hope we bomb the hell out of whatever country these assholes operate out of. Make it clear to the world that housing terrorists who do this sort of thing is an act of war, and will result in war. Make them police their own shit in that way.

Fuck'em.

no, there have been reports of people on board AA flight 11 (the first tower to hit) of a flight attentant calling the ground saying that they've been hijacked and two flight attendants were stabbed. most likely the pilots were instructed to fly towards NYC because the flight was from boston to LA. when they got close enough, the pilots were most likely killed, as i don't think anyone would even consider flying a plane towards a building even with a gun at their head.

as well, a person in the plane that was hijacked that crashed in pennsylvania managed to lock himself in the bathroom and call 911. on the phone, he said that they were hijacked by 2 people, and the people on the ground said that they could hear gunshots over the phone.
i want to hear what the black boxes have to say. this would clear up some of the confusion.
as well, don't forget about the car bomb outside the US state department. they are all related.

another idea that came across over the news, is that the people who are responsible for the terrorist attacks in africa, were said to be sentenced tomorrow. this may be completely related or not at all.
it's still unreal.

It's sad that many of us will measure changes in our lives by this abhorrent attack. I wish there were more events like a Van Halen show, a super bowl, or an Easter mass that mark our lives in such a profound way. My emotions are raw, and I feel for the families and friends who were murdered.

It is my belief that we should close our boarders to all Islamic countries, and exercise extreme prejudice to all who harbor or support terrorism. There are many Islamic people that will miss out on the treasures that come with freedom in America, but let us agree that terrorists have spoiled it for them. If you do not agree with this theory, than stand up against your government who supports the Bin Laden's of the world and earn back your trust in America as the compasionate people who turned in the terrorists.

i hope that the people responsible are punished, however WW 3 will kill us all, so i think that levelling afghanistan may not be the best idea.

I heard a commentator talking about how he'd said we'd make no distinction between terrorists and those that harbor them.

I think the man is right on the mark with that. Terrorism has tried to hold the world hostage for 30+ years, and it's time we put an end to it.

America has been loved or hated around the world. It's time for those who hate us to live in fear. We've always had the resources to do that, but lacked the determination and will. Things changed today.

There's no way to defend against something like what happened today, so that's not an option. It's time to kill all the cowards who promote, defend, supply, and hide the scum that do these things.

They've brought it upon themselves.

This is truly disgusting news and makes me sick. I feel for the familes of loved ones lost and I pray for all involved. This is a wake up call and we need to come together as a nation to keep our country safe. We can't police the world anymore, we have to take care of our own. I fully believe Bush will hold his word and Oslaba been layin' is going to his. Too bad for Afganisuck harboring this dumbass because they are going to get nuked. Here is a prime example of the western civilized world vs. animalistic, uncivilized fanatics. In the Persian Gulf skirmish we targeted Saddam and pretty much left the civilians alone even though it was war. This terrorist group targets innocent civilians just because of hatred for a particular lifestyle. Those people are animals simply put and are raised this way. There is nothing we can do about that but at least we can dedicate more funds to military spending and our defense system. This will never end so I think it's time to protect our own.

i agree with you MikeL, but i'm a bit hesitant in starting anything that could result in WW 3. we'd all lose that war. i think that it's important that we find out who is responsible and handle it responsibly and professionally. just going out and levelling the middle east is not the appropriate way to handle things. (not that i'm insinuating that you think that or anything). smilies/smile.gif

I just saw a guy predicting a full scale war as a result of this. I don't know what to think of that - a war isn't a great option, but what else can you do in this situation? This has gone too far, what ever needs to be done to rid this world of terrorism should be done - even if that means war. These scum-suckers need to pay - and if a war is the only way to bring them what they deserve then so be it.

Thanks for wishing me well, guys. It's much appreciated. I'm OK, and I hope the same is true for the rest of our New York VHForums members. The same goes for NY'ers that frequent the other various VH-related boards.

My uncle watched the second plane hit the second tower from just one block away. He wasn't hurt, thankfully. When I spoke to him, he said he couldn't believe he'd seen the plane hit the building... And that that only a short while later, he couldn't see either tower, at all.

My cousin was stuck down on Wall Street for quite some time. He couldn't leave immediately because it was as if they were in pitch black. When he left the building he was crawling on his hands and knees. He wasn't hurt, other than for inhaling the soot and ash.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure I've lost a family friend. He was to have been having a breakfast meeting at the top of one of the towers. He worked many years with my grandfather. I'm almost glad my grandfather's no longer with us so he didn't have to witness this.

I don't think I'll ever get over watching the plane fly into the tower, myself. It was unbelievable. Watching the towers burn and then implode broke my heart. All those lives lost; cops and firemen having gone in to help save innocents. The country will never be the same, let alone New York.

I'll tell you this, though... When I saw the members of the House and Senate spontaneously begin singing "God Bless America" tonight, it really got to me. That was epic.

The only bigger FUCK YOU than that which we can give to the bastards will be when we light their fucking tent-cities up.

I actually heard, live, in person, somebody actually say that if Afghanistan would give up Bin Laden, and he was brought carefully into the US for a fair trial, that justice would be done (in her eyes). Hearing that pissed me off about as much as the attacks themselves.

Personally, if we end up nuking the entire middle east, I'll be more than accepting of it. A 'surgical' approach will not strike fear into anyone, and would likely fail (Hussein is probably having cramps from giggling right now). I don't wanna hear about human rights; those people gave those up today. And for every one of those West Bank kids dancing in the streets, I would enjoy seeing them each cut into ribbons by shrapnel or bullets.

Cruel or not, fuck them. Fuck them all.

I really have no personal association with this at all, but I don't think any single event has affected me on such a deep emotional level. My prayers are with anybody who is affected by this. Nobody deserves this to happen to them. It's just unbelievable. smilies/frown.gif

And no matter how deep your political convictions, you'd have to be insane to think they justify murdering innocent people like this. smilies/mad.gif

I really hope everyone in NYC is Okay. Good luck everyone...

My GOD! I'm so grateful to hear that the NYC linkers are okay! DIF and Jonathon...once I received word that my brother (works next door to building #1 of the WTC) got out and to a friend's home... I sat down to worrying about my friends here and at Slawterhouse. I tell you what though, it was an agonizing four hours before he could get through. smilies/frown.gif

All the while I sat there, willing for the phone to ring with either his voice or our mom's telling me that she'd heard something good. Then it struck me that there would be literally, and potentially ten thousand families waiting for that same phone call, and it's never gonna come.

Thank god for the passengers on those planes who had the foresight to call their families (or employers) as the case may be. I believe they provided information about the terrorists that will successfully lead us to their organizer.

This is the single most greatest tragedy to ever befall upon the United States and the world, period. Unbelievable!

But I've heard on the news this morning, that there is hope of discovering who was behind this. I sure as Hell hope we (the U.S.) do something bold, swift, and with great force and strike back at whomever was responsible for this.

What a tragic, tragic day....

With all due respect to other linkers in the world, I will voice my humble opinion:

The United States Of America, is the singel greatest coutnry in thr world and my God this will not break us! We will perservere, and overcome this national tragedy!

God Bless America!!

I am getting angry at the people that are overreacting by saying we need to nuke whomever is necessary. Do you people not understand the ramifications of a nuclear strike?

One nuke leads to another. There are PLENTY of nuclear weapons in this world that are in the hands of our nations enemies. Don't have so much confidence that the US could prevent this kind of thing.

If a nuclear strike happens, we are all doomed. This planet will die.

I’ve been sick to my stomach from the first moment I heard about this disgusting disregard for human life. I’m glad to hear a lot of the NY Linkers have checked in to let us know that they are OK.

This thing is really bugging me, I don’t know what to do with the anger that I’m feeling because I don’t know who to be mad at, if that makes any sense. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/fire1.gif I hope they catch the rotten motherfuckers who caused this & torture them for the rest of their rotten, miserable existence. Fuck the death penalty, that’ll be letting ‘em off easy. Torture them daily, morning till night, make them wish that they were dead.

My condolences go out to all the people who were killed and also to their families and friends. Good luck & God Bless the people of NY & DC who have to go through the tough & disturbing process of cleaning up this awful mess.

God Bless America!!!!

Arafat & the Taliban's condemnations were pathetic! I hope that the President not only nails the party responsible, but goes after known terrorist camps all over the world, and their host nations if necessary for harboring them. Overkill?--not in the name of crushing terrorism!

It won't result in WW3--too many countries condemned the act.

Libya hasn't been heard from much since we responded to the Pan Am flight over Scotland.

The Palestinians just plain disgust me! What kind of Allah approves of cowardice? Where is it written in the Koran that terrorism is good? And they wonder why they get such a bad rap?!

I think you're getting all worked up over a type of response that most likely will not happen.

I do, however, think this action warrants an overwhelming, massive retaliatory response. In this case, there is no such thing as overkill. It is better to err on the side of overkill here than to project a weak-willed response. These terrorists and any country that harbors or sponsors them should be made to feel immediate panic and start crapping their pants when they here the words "United States of America."

I am despertately sad and overwhelmed by these events. I work in the tallest building in Kansas City, and no vistors are allowed into our parking garage, nor are cars permitted to stop around the building today. Last night, I stopped by my church where a prayer service was in progress. I found myself sobbing with grief and pity. How do we turn the other cheek? How do we love our enemies? I think the only way is to rise above death and revenge and pursue legal justice. Otherwise, we are no better than the perpetrators.

Therefore, please do not leave out the hijackers and plotters in your prayers. It is incomprehensible that God loved them as much as you and I, but it is true. They simply turned their backs on Him and chose evil. Who more in need of transformation than they? No more destruction -- please. smilies/frown.gif

I agree - it's inevitable, but I agree anyway. But no one is going to get nuked, the ramifications (including for the US) of doing that to the Middle East go way beyond what happened yesterday, tragic as it was.

Nukes won't happen. They're simply the wrong tool for the job.

I hope we don't rely on conventional bombing, either. Put troops on the ground, and let the sorry fucks see just who is about to kill them.

You can't combat this sort of violence with legalities. These organizations and the people who support them have no respect for the laws of civilized nations.

They think fear and terror are the ways to change things. We need to give it back to them, and do things on their terms.

It's not a matter of sinking to their level, or putting out principles aside. It's a matter of showing who ever is connected to this that America can't be bullied.

I know nuclear attack will not likely happen, I just can't believe that people are naieve enough to be in support of that kind of a retaliation. I fully support any military action in response... this IS a war. We cannot display weakness to our enemies... but to even breath the words "nuclear attack" is not just a gross overreaction on the part of emotional Americans, it is downright ignorant.

You know, since you've been posting on this board, I've probably agreed with 95% of what you've said. With this I cannot.

I do pray for these terrorists - I pray that they suffer hideously painful deaths. I pray that they will learn to live in fear of the U.S., our allies, and other peace loving nations. As MikeL said above, these people don't understand the laws of civilized countries. They don't understand the meaning of legal justice. No, the only thing they understand is a boot in the ass.

When you say no more destruction, I agree. I hope that there is a way to get to those responsible without jeopordizing the lives of any more innocent people.

Allowing those responsible to live, after this kind of evil devestation...no way. I can't swallow that.

It's such a relief to see us all come together like this.

I agree nukes are not the best idea, but the whole civilized world is behind America in any decision it will make concerning retaliation.

If I were a good, law abiding Muslim, I'd be terrified! Muslims must flush out the evil, or feel the full effects of our wrath. I know I will forever be prejudice towards Muslims, and its a damn shame because they're not all bad, but they need to understand that unless they show some cooperation in revealing the terrorists, that is the hand they are dealt.

It's a shame this stereotyping is going along; but alas, it was inevitable. smilies/frown.gif

America has really impressed me as a country in the last two days. To see thousands at blood banks across the country doing their part to help is a very warming feeling in this time of crisis.

Don't kill them, that's what they want. I'd rather see them thrown into one of our nation's worst maximum security prisons. Knowing that they're being ass fucking raped on a daily basis for life would satisfy my lust for vengeance.

They don't deserve the luxury our prisons would provide them.

They don't belong in our courts. Our justice system doesn't apply to them. They're not Americans.

I have to agree with law chick. We DO need to pray for those terrorists. We need to pray that they'll see that what they're doing is wrong. We need to pray that their hearts soften and realize the pain and suffering that they've caused to innocent people. That this awakening will lead them to stop spreading hatred and destruction.

We need to retaliate. We need to say that we cannot and will not tolerate anything like this. I can't believe that anyone would even suggest nukes as an alternative. I don't want ground troops to go in either. We don't need to lose any more lives over this. Military strikes...from the air or sea. They'll know who it's coming from, they don't need to see the face of a young American. As I write, and you read, you know that they're sitting and anticipating just that...a brutal retaliatory American strike. Sometimes anticipation can be worse then the real thing.

MikeL

Bombs are impersonal, and temporary. Putting troops on the ground has a wholely different pyschological effect, and sends a wholely different message. We've always been lose with our missles and bombs, but we only send in troops when we're serious.

Everyone in uniform knows that they have an obligation to protect their country, with their lives if they have to. They all signed up knowing and understanding that. And in my experience they feel pretty strongly about it, and take their oaths seriously. War is like that. We have to come to grips with the fact that this isn't over.
