2009/2010 MLB Hot Stove Thread
The 2009 season is now over, so we can start talking about the offseason. Who will win MVP, Cy Young, Rookie Of The Year? Which free agent will be given a ton more money than he's worth, probably by a New York team? Will the Cubs find a taker for Milton Bradley? Will the Red Sox keep Varitek? Will the owners expand replay? How many "NY" decals will show up on SUVs in your non-New York area neighbourhood now?

the free agent name that will shock most will be Aroldis Chapman. Someone (probably the Yanks) will give him 40 or 50 million.

Is that the Cuban pitcher?
Red Sox will throw a bunch of money at that too. But, as always, if the Yankees want him, they'll get him.
Biggest issue in Red Sox nation is left field. Figure there are what, maybe 5 guys out there - Bay, Damon, Matsui, Abreau, and Holliday - that could/should be on their radar. Yankees are going to get at least one of them, if not two. Will be interesting to see. I know in the press there is a lot of talk about bringing Damon back just for the entertainment of the initial press conference. All that BS aside, he'd be a great fit if they can't resign Bay. I don't want Holliday. Not sure if Matsui can play the field anymore. I'd prefer Bay on a 3 or 4 year deal, but if they can't get that done, I'd be fine with Damon or Abreau on a 2 year deal.
There is also an expectation that the Red Sox will make another run trading for Adrian Gonzalez and/or Felix Hernandez. Obviously, getting someone the caliber of Gonzalez would change their needs in LF. Actually, I think it would make Damon an even better fit.
And don't rule out a trade that's not on anyone's radar at this point. Theo isn't shy about talking to anyone. Wouldn't shock me if he came back with a trade for someone like Prince Fielder. Not saying THAT would happen, just using that as an example.

No! Don't bring Judas Damon back to Boston! Fuck him!
Red Sox need to develop their own left fielder if that's all that' out there (if they can't get Bay to stay).
Heard something on the game last night about Matsui going to Seattle to play with Ichiro? That'd be kind of cool, though I'm not sure how close it is to being reality.

LOL - that's exactly why some in the press want him back. Wouldn't that be a fascinating press conference? Schilling was just talking about it on the radio - he thinks it would be a trip and a half hearing Damon trying to answer for his "I'll never play in NY", then playing in NY, then coming back.
There's nobody in their system that's an outfielder, to my knowledge. Maybe they picked one up in the 09 draft, not sure. Takes years to develop a prospect, so they're going to need a stop gap or two.
You never know, but I'd be surprised if one of those 5 didn't end up in LF in Boston next year. I would be surprised if Toronto outbid the Red Sox, but it could happen. My guess - if one of those 5 don't come, look for a big trade for a bat somewhere else, with 1b being the most likely.

I'm going to enjoy this title run for a little longer before I turn my focus to 2010.

Would Murphy be helping them now instead of the, uh, nothing that they got for him?

The free agent market is weak this off season. Next season Pujols and Halladay.
St. Louis will probably sign Albert before it even gets that far and Toronto will keep Halladay if they truly wish to compete but I think Halladay is a goner during the season next year.

The feeling out here is that the Giants will make Bay a very nice offer too.
Boston does need to get a firstbaseman to lock up for a few years and move Youkilis back to third or perhaps even use him in a trade that could land you a King Felix in return and then take a shot at a thirdbaseman.

Mike-
The popular rumor among the Cubs circle right now is that we swap contracts with you guys. Milton Bradley goes to the Blue Jays in exchange for Vernon Wells.
How much stock do I put into this and, if this is true, what's to be expected out of Vernon Wells? Will he help the team or hurt the team?

Trading Youkilis would be a very bad move. He's one of our few strong bats and he plays a solid 3rd base and 1st base. Anyone we would get back for him would be a downgrade.
